I'll bet James was right on all counts, too! I can see Prince stealing Rick's idea...and his woman. As far as actual talent and quality is concerned, James musically beat Prince with the Mary Jane Girls. Both of their albums had much more quality that Vanity or Apollonia 6.

I think Prince had a policy of not giving autographs, and this was also around the time when Prince was acting like a prima-dona asshole., while Jick James always had an open and friendly personality. And, of course, James was always doing drugs, which probably elevated his temperament.

The book also mentioned one more little incident while Prince was opening for him: Rick wanted to have a drum-off, but Prince wasn't the least bit competitive. Funny, Rick James made fun of Prince's drumming, but prince was a fantastic drummer, and probably better than Rick! he just didn't feel the need to show off.

Interesting. I agree in regards to the Mary Jane Girls vs Vanity/Apollonia 6. I am going to have to read his book.

He was lucky because Rick and his crew would definitely throw down!
