"When I was living in Long Island about '68, Bobby Schiffmann called me from the Apollo, telling me he needed me to work with Marvin [Gaye] because his duet partner, Tammi Terrell, was sick.

I had to learn the song which should have come to Chuck [Jackson] and me, 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough', which Marvin and Tammi had out at that time.

So, I'm sitting in my dressing room at the Apollo, when in walks the whole Motown entourage and, instead of greeting me, I have all these voices at me - "Did you learn the songs? Did you do this, do that?"

And the people moved back, the waves, just like Moses, parted like this, everybody stood aside meekly, and there he was in the doorway, in all his glory!

...It's very important for me to do even better in performance than I do on record - not the other way around.

I love performing - that contact with people and I regard records as being a vehicle to get you over.

No matter how you look at it, the fact is that it is necessary to have a big, crossover record to be able to reach that bigger white audience. Up until now, I would have to say that it's my own people that have kept me going, that have kept my name alive, and bought my records.
