    Where to start?

I think you may see several from me Grape.

My favourite non-Motown soul male artists, by definition well-known songs to begin with:

2 Solomon Burke: Cry To Me
3 Bobby Womack: More Than I Can Stand
    4 Jackie Wilson: Lonely Teardrops
5 Isaac Hayes: Walk On By
6 Bill Withers: Ain't No Sunshine
7 Curtis Mayfield: We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue
8 Sam Cooke: Change Is Gonna Come
9 Roy Hamilton: Crackin Up Over You
    10 James Brown: It's A man's World

2 Aretha Franklin: I Never Loved A Man
3 Etta James: i'd rather go blind
4 Gladys Knight: The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me
    5 Sade: Smooth Operator
6 Joan Armatrading: The Weakness In Me
    7 Duffy: Warwick Avenue
8 [[Ike &) Tina Turner: Proud Mary
9 Maxine Brown: All In My Mind
10 Doris Troy: I'll Do Anything

    1. "Lucky To Be Loved [[By You)"- Emanuel Lasky
    2. "This Heart of Mine"-Artistics
    3. "Young Boy"-Barbara Green
4."[[Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher & Higher"-Jackie Wilson
    5. "Move On Love"-Charles Perry
    6. "My World Is On Fire"-Jimmy Mack
    7. "I'm So Proud"-Impressions
    8. "Mama Didn't Lie"-Jan Bradley
    9. "That Was My Girl"-Parliaments

Hmmm.... Like Robb, these are just off the top of my head...

    Duke Browner: "Crying Over You"
    Lou Ragland: "I Travel Alone"
Jackie Wilson: "I Get The Sweetest Feeling"
The Artistics: "This Heart Of Mine"
    Bobbi Lynn: "Earthquake"
The Charades: "Key To My Happiness"
The Invincibles: "It's That Love Of Mine"
Otis Redding: "Just One More Day"
George Carrow: "Angel Baby [[Don't You Ever Leave Me)"
Lou Rawls: "You've Made Me So Very Happy" [[yes, I know this is really pushing the 'non-Motown' brief)

...I'm clearly feeling a bit Northern today, ask me tomorrow and you'd probably get a very different ten [[though Duke Browner and Otis would stay in it, I'm fairly sure...)

"the 10 most soulful tracks you would treasure to eternity..."

Starting my list with a song that would have made my list for the past 30 years....

the greatest B-side of all time:

Couldn't settle on an instrumental.....so I let my girls [[newly 12 and 13) throw in their pick here.....even though they just went off to do their lists.

    Nobody's looking......Time to cheat.

Couldn't do this without including Otis, the greatest soul singer of all time. Loved the one someone posted earlier....and dozens of others. Since I can't settle on a fave.....more than a minute....here are the 2 that I've been playing the most lately.

    4. She Put the Hurt on Me.

    Wait a minute
I gotta tell ya about it
She give me 22 minutes of love
I had to think about it
    She give me 40 minutes
I had to talk about it
    She give me 60 minutes
    I can't do without it
She give me one hour of love yal
She knocked me on the floor.
    She give me that yeah

    and

    Hard to Handle

    Boys come along
    They're a dime a dozen
    That ain't nothing but
    10 cent loving
    Pretty little thing
    Let me light your candle
Cause momma I'm sure hard to handle...
    Yes I am.

    5. Love and Affection - Joan Armatrading

Joan's been a true personal fave and I'm knocked out by her mention earlier on this list...
and Bettye's cover of Down to Zero[[I think she now owns it.)
......but I must admit, the girls say Joan's wearing on them lately.....

So we've been playing a lot of Keb Mo, who's growing on me exponentially.

Okay.....5 down and no jazz......and nothing to dance to.....let's fix that.

    6. Compared to What - Les McCann and Eddie Harris.

My fave "What's Going On" song.
