2014 RIAA Music Industry Shipment and Revenue Statistics

This is an interesting article with statistics of sales, downloads, streaming of music. It has pie charts of configurations and comparisons to sales from last year. No surprise that the physical format continues to decline. It is a completely different industry than the one that I knew.

Lots of info here. Check it out

I'm also sure it is much worse than this report suggests. This is a public relations document put out on behalf of their members to put the best foot forward. The RIAA was never particularly accurate. It was manipulated by it's members in the 90's to try and pump up particular albums that should have done better than they actually did.

Soundscan, used since the early 90s, has greatly improved the accuracy of tracking actual sales.

The figures that should alarm the industry is the one for streaming. That's 27%!

I agree. It alarmed Taylor Swift.
