Was listening to this classic slow jam earlier this morning by the Masqueraders . A truly great tune with amazing harmonies. It still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it! Released in 1969 on AGP.
Enjoy!

This is a great, great song & Soul Music the way that it was meant to be sung!!!
The lead vocal, the call & response from the group & the harmonies when he sings "To prove my love to you", are perfection.
And these lyrics...they're not writing them like this any more
f I were a rich man… [[yeah)
I’d spend every dime
Just to prove to you
That I want you to be mine
If I were a poet … [[yeah)
I’d write lots of beautiful poems
The words would come from the depths of my heart
To express my love for you, darlin’
Oh, but I’m just an average guy and I don’t know how to show you
That I’m just an average guy and I don’t know how to tell you
That I love you
Oh I love you, yeah yeah yeah
Darlin’ If I were a beggar
I would stand on a corner every day
And I’d get down on my knees
And I’d beg for the right words to say… [[yeah yeah)
If I were a clown
I’d paint me a real sad face
Oh just to get your attention darlin’
Yes then maybe, maybe you’ll look my way
Oh but I’m just an average guy and I don’t know how to show you
That I’m just an average guy and I don’t know how to tell you
That I love you
Ooh, baby oh yeah
I said I’m just an average guy and I don’t know how to show you
That I’m just an average guy and I don’t know how to tell you
That I love you
I love you darlin’
The Masqueraders should've been so much bigger & had more success than they had. Such was the talented field of Soul Music in those days, as well as the perils of regionality in the music industry in those days.
But my God...what a song!!!

and guess what...The Masqueraders are still performing. My friend Charlie Horner and his wife Pam ran into them at a club in Memphis which eventually led to Charlie having them perform on 2 occasions here in NJ. You can see pics of them at Charlie's website classicurbanharmony.net He has a wonderful site. Tell him Ken Thompson sent you.
One of my favorite songs of all times. Glad to know they are still out there.
PhillyKen,
And even more amazingly, from the 1960s forward, they never actually broke up & always found a way to perform, record deal or no record deal!
Here's another great song.
I always liked this one...

Just good music from an underatted group.
Hi PhillyKen!
Unfortunately, they don't perform anymore. Actually the last thing they did was for Pam and Charlie. My recent interview with Harold Thomas at

One of my favorite groups of ALL time. Talk about excellence in R&B vocal group harmony!! It doesn't get any better.
Great thread and great songs. Thank you!!!
