One of the original legends of black ‘60s music wowed hundreds of pupils at one Ulster school on Thursday afternoon.

Mary Wilson, one of the superstar members of Motown group the Supremes, was at the ‘official opening’ of Lagan College.

The college has been up and running since last summer, but the US diva flew in for a formal ceremony welcoming the full-scale arrival of the integrated college.

She mentioned that the US had its own experiences of division and segregation - evident in one of the songs she performed, ‘Strange Fruit’ - and hailed the college’s ethos of educating Protestants and Catholics together.

She had rapturous welcome for the roughly 400 pupils who turned up for the performance, held on one of the school’s exceptional closure day.
