Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

    http://rockhall.com/inductees/

I find it odd that The Marvelettes have not been included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Does anyone know how the actual nominees are identified? And then how certain nominees are turned into inductees?

Is it done by indiviuals/groups who advocate for certain acts? ... or is it an in house committee? ... or is it record labels, etc.? Are there any real criteria?

    I am curious.

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

The Foundation’s nominating committee selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of more than 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes - and more than 50 percent of the vote - are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.

Can't believe that the Marvelettes weren't nominated this year, especially after they were nominated last year.

I suppose when you look over their complete body of work, they don't compare to some of the other nominees, but when you look at the impact of "Please Mr. Postman"; Motown's first #1 Pop hit, later covered by the likes of the Beatles and the Carpenters.....this song alone helped put Motown on the map.

Off-topic: Wikipedia states that Diana Ross and the Supremes covered "Please Mr. Postman".....?

Diana recorded it on her AN EVENING WITH DIANA ROSS album.

Why hasn't D. Ross been nominated as a solo artist?

The Andantes were no doubt behind some screen or fluffed up An Evening With Diana Ross in some studio and so "Diana Ross and the Supremes" is about as accurate as ever.

The R n R Hall of Fame doesn't look so kindly on the Streisand Ross Cher types, let alone Petula Clark, Lesley Gore, Marvelettes. Diana may have to content herself with the Lifetime Achievement Grammy, the Group R n R Hall of Fame, the Kennedy Centre Honors, the Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award etc; I don't think a solo R N R H O F is in the works.

Last year the Hall instituted an online fan vote and the top three acts at the conclusion of the online vote then receive an additional vote to their tally. Going by the list of nominees this year, the slam dunk choice for induction will be Nirvana.

I agree with Nirvana being in, but the over all list of inductees I heard today was a bit ho-hum in my opinion.

Out of the current nominees, I've long been rooting for Chic. If they don't get in this year with the success of "Get Lucky," I don't know what it would take.

Many people call it the Rock Hall of Shame. You see posts all over Facebook. They ignore the R&B artists of the 50's and 60's who influenced the people who get nominated. Those people should be in the Hall because they were the pioneers. The only ones I think deserving from this year's list are Hall & Oates, Paul Butterfield's Blues Band and Linda Ronstadt. The Dells were inducted a few years back and they deserved to be. There are many more from their era who should be inducted as well.

I'm told by a voting member Chic gets nominated year after year because the committee likes Nile Rogers. They never get many votes from the industry voters because they don't think Chic is worthy. I would agree. Not before the early R&B artists who layed the groundwork and paved the way.
