    Lou Ragland Royalties Check

Lou Ragland has been in the entertainment business since the end of the 1950's. He had his 1st 45 release in 1962 [[on Cleveland based Way Out Records). Since then he has sung live & on recording sessions, played guitar [[& other instruments) on live gigs and in the studio, written songs, arranged & produced tracks, been a studio engineer, run his own groups and record labels and taught his musical / studio skills to younger folk.
His old stuff [[northern & funk) has always been popular in the UK and so many tracks were legally put out here about 10 / 12 years ago [[before that, all his stuff was bootlegged). He got an advance for his tracks from the UK label and sales went well so further royalties were due.
The UK company sent 3 monthly checks to him [[for record sales) but they were Sterling checks which his bank couldn't deposit as the sums were smaller than their currency exchange charges. We sorted that by having me named as his UK rep and the checks [[cheques) coming to me. I then pay the sums on via my & his PayPal accounts.
Numero got interested in the Cleveland soul stuff and so licensed all his old tracks for US release about a yar back.
So after over 50 years in the biz, FINALLY Lou has been sent a royalties check for his publishing. It's only small & so he doesn't intend to cash it. He's gonna sell it on to a fan of his music as a piece of memorabilia that they can frame up or whatever.
This seems the best possible use he can make of this item.

That's a pretty small check. I'm shocked at how small it is. No wonder some artists here in Memphis are annoyed at reissues of their music in the UK. I can see why they are angry.

That check isn't for UK sales.
It isn't even for US sales of his Numero released package.
It's just his writers royalties for sales in the US of the self penned songs included on his reissue package.
Not sure exactly how much songwriters royalties are but it's gotta be just cents per song per record sale. No one [[unless they have a chart hit OR an old song they wrote is sampled in a chart hit) will get rich from song writers fees if sales of the product aren't massive.

HA HA!! Yes, people would be surprised at the small royalty and residual checks artists receive.

Lou is a friend, he lives here in Vegas. I'm waiting for him to come over to check out the hook-up for our dual VHS and DVD recorder to our television. He's a bit savvy when it comes to technical stuff.

S.S. say Hi to Lou from me when he comes over.
I used to visit Vegas a lot [[once a year) when all the Casinos had lounges that featured good live [[soul) acts but those days are long gone I'm afraid.
Have many places converted their ex lounges back from being disco rooms yet ??

    John,
    I will.
Most of the hotels are new.
The Cannery showcases soul acts like The O'Jays, The Manhattans, Little Anthony & The Imperials, etc......

I just checked his songs on MCPS/PRS and all the released ones are being claimed by a UK based publishing company so he should be getting regular 6 monthly statements and cheques if the advance has been recouped.
