Drawn down into the basement at my parents' house, pops was down there getting down to Roy Ayers, a musician he says he bought albums by back in the day but couldn't really get into them, because he was usually into something else. But now he's older, retired, chilling and smoking a little herb - only for medicinal purposes - he's relaxed and into funk jazz, Betty Davis, the Blackbyrds, and lots of music I never heard before. He was playing some Dinah Washington earlier that blew me away. Guess, I'm getting exposed too. Ayer's Don't Stop the Feeling and Searching are baaddd jams. Suddenly, I 've got a mad craving for some munchies.

Sept. 10th is Roy Ayers' birthday. I knew something was up!

My sister introduced me to Roy Ayres' music back in 1977, when he released the "Secrets" album. It was her first year at a university in another city, and was exposed to Black people who listened to jazz and quiet storm music.

I grew up on Dinah Washington, as she was my mother's favorite singer.

But, I never smoked any herb.

I got turned on to Roy Ayres back in 1976 while at college....Err'body on the "yard" was into him....Recently turned Mr.Gzu onto the "Doo-Doo" tune, and now he won't shut up singing it [[and he's got a deep bass voice so you KNOW this can't be good)....In fact, he found my Roy Ayres CDs and I don't know WHEN I'll see them again....

And when he came to town for a concert - tickets were hard to get and went real quick..

Roy Ayers got around more than Tupac!...I been listening to him seems like foreverHe's
worked with more folks than I can name at this time but aside from his own releases I
really liked his work with Fela Kuti and Rick James, particularly on the first Stone City Band
album which also featured stellar vocals by The Pointer Sisters.Wish I still had that release...
BTW, The Blackbyrds kept it hot too, Kam....

I love Roy Ayers. I got introduced to his music when WHUR used to play him back in the late '80s. They used to have something called, "The In-Flight Concert Series" where they would play the music of the artist for an hour, sometimes more. The first one I heard, they did 2 hours... The next time they did, it was 3 hours--and that's rare.

Anyway, I've got quite a few albums of his, got all of his albums from 68-89 or so on MP3 files, etc. I didn't like the Polydor 2 CD set from 1995 or so but there's a cool 2 CD import from a few years later called, Destination Motherland that's more like it.

Roy Ayers built up a HUGE underground following in the U.K. in the late '70s/early '80s and I think he still comes to perform in London virtually every year [[usually around Christmas).

He was particularly played in the London area and songs lie "Running Away" and "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" got significant radio exposure on Robbie Vincent's Saturday Lunchtime Show on BBC Radio London. To this day he still gets a lot of airplay [["Ayer"play?) on stations such as JazzFM and specialist Soul/Jazz shows.

Funnily .. "Get on Up, Get on Down", which his biggest chart hit here [[it got to #41 in 1978) hardly ever gets played anymore ..

It didn't do too well here as a single. I didn't like it at the time because i felt it was too disco.

Kamasu_Jr, that is one hip dad you have! That vinyl record collection he has is worth its weight in gold! Be careful about those "cravings for munchies," though. Although the state of Washington has made it legal to smoke certain substances, Canadians crossing the border are being asked if they have ever "inhaled" and are being denied entry for being honest. When President Clinton visited Canada years back, he was greeted with banners declaring "Inhale to The Chief!" Anyway, thank goodness being able to enjoy soulful funk has not been deemed illegal!

Yep, Roy's got a lot of great ballads, "No Stranger to Love," "Stairway to the Stars," "Is It Too Late to Try," etc. He always got really good singers too. The only thing I didn't really like from that era was that Ubiquity album on Elektra, wasn't crazy about Ramp either...
