Another vote for 1966 for soul.
Also for pop music in general it's the greatest year.

They were never bubble gum. They were pop.
Yes, that would have been great to hear, Motown Eddie.
How well did they do? What do you think?

- "You Don't Work, You Can't Eat" was recorded in about '68'69 by James Brown & Marva Whitney as "If You Don't Work, You Can't Eat".
Seems that was also done by them funky style. The difference...
It seems there was a "funky" version of Work/Eat. I don't like it personally, at all.

Thank you for this information about J.C. motony. Much appreciated. I wonder what happened to him.
Thank you for pointing me in the direction of “I’ll work it out” Kenneth. Great bluesy song.

Me too and the title track, which is very mid-'60s soul in style.

...who was part of the James Brown Review in the mid-60s.
Did he have any of his own fame away from James B?

I could sit and listen to you talk all day, alan and no, I have not even heard of Jack Spector on Radio Caroline. I must seek out his shows - see if anyone recorded them.
That's so interesting alan - re Gary Stevens. I'm actually a big fan of his SRE shows...some of which can be found on Mixcloud.

As someone who is both a fan of The Beatles and '60s soul I think she really hits the mark with this one. Shame it wasn't a hit.
What do YOU think?

Shake Me, Wake Me - is hardly in the same league as Reach Out. Nowhere close.

JJ Barnes did a very good version - sadly, never released.

I'd like to special mention "Everybody Needs Somebody".
I agree. Love that.

It appears on The Beach Boys "Wild Honey" album. A lot of the songs have a sort of late '60s "soul sound"

Great name, arr&bee!
from famous British singles reviewer [[& major soul lover) Penny Valentine.
Those are my faves - along with "Do I Love Her".
No, I don't. I especially love the original songs - not so much the covers.
For me it's "I Was Made To Love Her", by far.
[[Though I'm not crazy about the title song)
Thanks, Johnny. Never heard that version before. But it seems to be different from the one I posted @ OP...that's the version I'm looking for.
It's also [[the one minute clip) included with this...
