Just For Fun.... Motown Boo-Boos

Not to be critical, but just for some laughs, we all recall that Motown has been known to make some real errors on album covers, liner notes, etc., over the years. Proofreading was not always their strong suit; however, it was cool because "it's what's in the grooves that counts."

Two big Motown boo-boos for me is when;
1. They released initial copies of The Elgins' "Darling Baby" with The Downbeats name on it.
2. Some copies of Chris Clark's "Love's Gone Bad" came out with "Love's Gone Mad" as the title.

Proofreading must not be your strong suit either. Full page [add]. I however feel that considering the resources Motown had they did a fairly decent job on proofreading. The one that comes to mind is Mabel John vs. Mable John [[Tamla 54040).

First one that I thought of was The Marvelettes' 1962 LP The Marveletts Sing. How could you miss that e!?

I have a Marvelettes single that has the title of "Too Many Fish In The Sea" as "Two Many Fish In The Sea".

It can been seen on Google images. I don't know how to post pictures.

While searching for that I also saw a Gordy single for The Temptations that said "Masterpieces" instead of "Masterpiece".

Ironically the mistitled Chris Clark VIP single "Love's Gone Mad" is on that same Google images page.

On the B-side of Barrett Strong's 'Money [[That's What I Want)' [[on the first release of the song on Tamla) the title "Oh I Apologize" is misspelt as "Apoligize" [[the correct spelling of the word Apologize is on the Anna Records release).

On the Temptations Compact Command Performances CD, "Hey Girl [[I Like Your Style)" is listed on the liner, but the song that's on the CD is "Hey Girl", the Freddie Scott cover.

I seem to recall that the poster that came with the Right On album shows beads missing from Mary's and Cindy's sleeves, as well. In addition, Jean's [[I think) dress appears shorter in length than the other ladies' dresses. Also on the back cover of that album with the black dresses, Jean's sleeve appears too short, and the "tassle" from Jean's bosom is distracting.

Of course, "Stoned Love" sounded a lot edgier and more in line with the mood of the times back in 1970.

Yep, "Stoned" is a typo. If you listen they are clearly singing "Stone Love." I think the session logs say "Stone Love."

On both the original release of Meet The Supremes [[in Oct. 1962) and the reissue [[in Mar. 1965), the back cover of the album incorrectly lists 'The Boy That Got Away' on the album and omits 'Let Me Go The Right Way' on the Side 2 track listing. The correct line up for Side 2 is on the record label [[on both issues).

In Smokey Robinson and the Miracles 35th Anniversary 4-CD set, there is a listing in the back of the groups complete discography from the beginning. It shows a 1958 release Your Love [[Is All That I Need b/w I Love You So as Fury 1002. This is not correct. Inside My Life by Smokey Robinson does not mention this 45 release, however, I located two on eBay for sale and it clearly says

Carl Hogan and his Miracles were an L.A. group, who recorded for John Dolphin's Money Records. I believe that Dolphin leased the masters of those 2 songs to Bobby Robinson, who put it out on his Fury Records. Smokey's Miracles only had those 2 45s on George Goldner's End Records in 1958 [[with a reissue of one of them after "Shop Around" hit), and the 2 Chess releases in 1959 [["Bad Girl" and "All I Want Is You") not on a Motown label.

After a few lines of the song were revised by the producer, "Stoned Love" was recorded during the spring of 1970. The instrumental track was recorded with The Funk Brothers and at least 30 other session musicians in Detroit at Motown Studio B [[the former Golden World studio), while Jean Terrell, Mary Wilson, and Cindy Birdsong recorded their vocals in New York. The song was originally written and recorded as "Stone Love," but during the process of mixing and releasing, it was mislabeled as "Stoned Love."

On The Temptations' You've Got To Earn It-Lost And Found [[1962-1968) CD, track 14 is mistakenly called "I Now See You Clear Through My Eyes". When you listen to the song, you hear the correct title, "I Now See You Clear Through My Tears".
