Do Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke have a secret?

Aretha first two son's were fathered when she was 13 and 16 respectively. She has never revealed either of their fathers. The second, Edward, is said to be Sam Cookes child. What do you know/think etc.?

I have not seen her son Clarence. Where is a picture of him? Why are you so reluctant to say anything?

I think the father or fathers of Ms. Frankin's sons are none of our business.

Exposing the Many Skeletons in Aretha Franklin's Closet...

I've just finished reading this shitrag autobiography of Aretha Franklin's for the 2nd time and I must say, that this book is more full of shit than Diana Ross's "Secrets of a Sparrow" fluff autobio. Re-Re leaves so many gaps and holes in her life's story that this book is fucking fiction at best. OK, I know that ya'll are not from Detroit, so there's a lot of things that ya'll don't know about Re-Re's life that nay Detroiters are aware of, but she has been through hell and back and I guess she refuses to share her story with the public the way Chaka, Patti, Donna Summer and other Divas have done in the past. Instead Aretha and Co-Author David Ritz simply sugar-coated, glossed over and kept silent about a lot of things and ended up short-changing her readers:

*Born in Memphis, Tenn. Aretha Louise Franklin was born March 25, 1942. Her family moved to Detroit when she was 2.

*Her mother, Barbara, abandoned the family when she was 6, then died a few years later leaving Aretha, her sister's Carolyn and Erma, and brothers Cecil and Vaughan to be raised by their bible-thumping father, a prominent preacher Rev. Clarence Le Vaughan Franklin.

*She has 4 sons, by 4 different men: Clarence( who she got pregnant with at 14, rumored to be her father Rev. C.L. Franklin's child), had Edward two years later, Ted Jr. and KeCalf.

*Dropped out of high school and often left her kids with relatives while she chased men and pursued her musical career.

*Was a victim of incest and domestic violence(husband ted White was her manager who beat the hell out of her. He makes Ike look like Cliff Huxtable.

    * Rev. C.L. Franklin fornicated with gospel singer Clara Ward for many years and was good friends with Rev. James Cleveland(a closeted gay pedaphile preacher who molested dozen of his young male church members and infected many with AIDS before he died with the disease himself in 1991).

*Hates airplanes but loves to cook and eat. She is petrified of planes and has unhealthy habit of overeating.

*Has had a drinking problem since she was in her early 20's.

    * Is a very gifted pianist despite not knowing how to read sheet music.

*Has had bitter fallouts with Cissy Houston, Gladys Knight, Mavis Staples, Barbara Striesand, Luther Vandross, Patti Labelle or Diana Ross.

    * In 2003, her second oldest son, Edward Franklin, was under investigation for setting fire to one of her mansions in Bloomfield township, MI when police discovered him smelling of smoke and found traces of flame acclerant on his clothing close the scene of the crime. The arson charges were later dropped due to lack of evidence and because Aretha, her friend/employee/former fire chief, and Edward's lover George West wouldn't cooperate with the police and prosecutors. It is a well-known rumor that Edward is strung out on drugs and alcohol, openly gay and infected with AIDS and has resented his mother for years because he was molested by her ex-husband, actor Glynn Turman, when he was younger.

    * Her father was arrested for marijuana possession, was indicted for tax evasion and was under federal invesstigation for alleged ties to a major drug ring in Miami.
Although they claimed that their intent was to rob him for some expensive windows in his home, the guys who broke into his home and shot him were actually there to rob him for his $$ and dope, but he was at home at the time and exchanged gunfire with his assailants that night in 1979. He was shot in the knee and groin, lapsed into a coma where he remained for 5 years until his death in 1984(same year that Marvin Gaye died). When the police collected evidence from the scene of the crime, they found a closet full of porn and $10,000 hidden in the good Rev's home.

    * Although she has a personal net worth of $20 million, she has been sued numerous times for back taxes, not paying her employees and running up thousands if $$ in tabs and stiffing the bill.

*This autobiography "From These Roots" was highly anticipated, but was a major disappointment because it didn't reveal much about her personal life and covered up a lot of scandal regarding her dysfunctional upbringing, abusive, volatile marriages, many love affairs(most famous one was with Sam Cooke), numerous celebrity fueds, shady facts surrounding her father's death, financial troubles, etc.

I've heard this Aretha/Sam Cooke rumor for years now and that her father allegedly impregnated her. At times, Aretha can't discuss her father without getting very emotional. It's sad and a little strange. But C.L. Franklin was always controversial. Church folk in Detroit talked about him until the day he died.
Both Clarence and Edward do resemble Sam & Aretha. But Aretha also allegedly had an affair with Sam's brother L.C, , who Ted White shot after he, Aretha and LC had a fight at her home. The incident was covered in The Michigan Chronicle but basically covered up. L.C. could possibly be the daddy. Who knows what the deal really is?
Rumors have circulated about Aretha for years. I heard Clarence was the son who was allegedly molested by Glynn Turman and that Clarence was placed in a home for people with mental problems. But that's how it is with most rumors. They get twisted and distorted as they grow. I don't think Clarence has been seen in public in many years. She doesn't talk about him. No wonder she sings the way she does. You gotta go through some real pain to sing like that. And yes, her autobiography was a disappointment.

Aretha's book gave scenarios for her first two pregnancies, and they didn't involve Sam. Whether the scenarios are true or not is only known by Aretha and the fathers.

On the SAM COOKE: LEGEND dvd, Aretha mentioned that there was an occasion where she went into Sam's room, and they were talking. She made a point of saying Sam was single at the time. She then said their conversation "took a turn. Read between the lines." And at that point, her father started banging on the door. She concluded by saying that her father never knew that he changed the course of history that day. I think she and his brother L.C. are still friendly. There was an old article that had one of his children attending one of her 70s recording sessions, and he was in the audience when she appeared on OPRAH to promote her book.

I would hope that the rumors about Aretha's alleged abuse by her father are untrue. In the new book THE FAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH by Anthony Heilbut, the author mentions the rumor and said that some believe that it was started by John Hammond after he and Aretha had a falling out.

As Kamasu says, she gets rather emotional when discussing her father, crying during her acceptance speech at this year's Trumpet Awards for example. For years, it seems as if she's put him on a pedestal. It doesn't seem likely that she would have such high regard for someone who might have abused her in such a way.

VANITY FAIR's 1994 profile on Aretha mentioned that her son Clarence was a paranoid schizophrenic. Supposedly, he spends a lot of time in a Detroit institution. The recent revision of Mark Bego's book on Aretha mentioned that she had a bit of a problem with the pay rate that one of his nurses wanted to care for him.

I recall hearing the Glynn/Clarence rumors as well, but I doubt they are true. Aretha has said only positive things about Glynn since their divorce. I don't think she would do so if that rumor was true.

I hope Aretha has found true happiness in some points of her life.I do know that one of her sons has severe mental problems & that at one point thought he was Elvis. Aretha had instructed everyone around at the time to address him as Elvis. It seems like so many BIG talents have such painful lives.

That Aretha! Well, judging by Edwards pictures he resembles Sam alot. The lc coke incident was also mentioned in like a 1969 Jet magazine article. Therefore, it wasn't necessarily a cover-up. Edward looks like his father. He does not look like Aretha. To me he looks like Sam with the slim stature of her family, example her sister carolyn. The fact that she's keeping the paternity of her first two sons a secret means it's someone the public will know a care about. What's in darkness will definitely come to light.

Yes, it's unfortunately true...Aretha has the reputation for stiffing people for money for work people have done for her. I am quite familiar with a particular case where she stiffed someone, then called them to do more work for her. They refused without ALL the money upfront. She (through her representatives) refused those conditions...possibly planning to stiff that person again.

Pretty much what you are saying is that Clarence and Edward are Sam Cooke's sons. I saw a picture of Clarence. He looks similar him too.

I've heard it stated that all of us have "a public self, a private self and a secret self." When you get down to it, perhaps the only difference with Aretha and most of us, is that she is famous and "her business" is under a lot more scrutiny. I guess that's one perk of NOT being famous. LOL!

  19. #19
Oh boy here we go,see this is what happens when all these books start flying around, folk aretha's kid's daddys are none of our damn business, let's just enjoy her music before this turns into a frickin[supremes]thread geez.

The real Aretha Franklin story will probably not be told until she's gone. A biographer will find out the truth and it will be told. i agree, it's none of our business who her babies' daddies are, but Aretha is a public figure - not a role model - and she has opened her life up to public scrutiny because she depends on the public to support her.

Shame on you for gossiping about things that are none of your business.

The good book of Psalms rightly says:

“Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy."

Take head of those words for they are proof that God considers gossip a severe sin and he will “destroy” those who gossip.

That was a joke! That's why I put LOL. It's just fun. Lighthen up! Besides you're not God and cannot cast judgement upon me. Most things in all chat rooms are gossip. All the other stuff put on this thread about Aretha and you only attack me as being a gossiper! Why? I didn't put gossip I simply asked a question to see if anybody knew it were true or not.

You were prying into someone's business and gossiping so I repeat the quote from the good book of Psalms:

“Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him I will destroy."

Please read those words for they are proof that God considers gossip a sin.

If Miss Franklin want us to know the father of her sons she would have made this information public.

Not judging, just making an observation: maybe Aretha doesn't know who the father is.

  36. #36
Really, Aretha's story with men is no different from countless other women's stories with men. She was not the first woman to have had children out of wedlock or to have children by different men. Look at that ditz Kim Zolciak from Real Housewives of Atlanta, four children by three different fathers. She's celebrated for it. Aretha's story is her triumph over her obstacles. By the way, Sister Ree looked good on American Idol the other night.

I think she does and she's keeping her mouth shut. I can understand why she doesn't wanna reveal it. I don't think she wants them to know because she was really young. She kinda hints she and Sam had an affair ("read between the lines"). Of course with Clarence, it's understandable why she won't talk about that. And more power to her.

Her father was on my ish list anyway because he had a daughter with some little kid while he was still married to Aretha's mother, who didn't abandon her by the way. Her relationship with C. L. (aka Clarence LaVaughn) was reportedly very volatile.

She's obviously has triumphed, hasn't she? But yeah she does look good. Hope she's well though. Her spokesperson said she's taking June off after she gets her medical treatment.

Kam according to Kim's show, she was married to the girls' father and is seeking to have his parental rights revoked so that Kroy can adopt them. So with that being the case, she was/is married to her children's fathers.
