The 20 Grand Story
The Gold Room
Gladys Knight in foyer of The 20 Grand
(from the book 'my life story - Gladys  Knight')

Frantic Ernie Durham was the king of Detroit radio in the early sixties. So much so, that The 20 Grand built a special studio for him in the Gold Room, so that he could present his nightly show from there.

Each night, rows and rows of  young people would queue patiently in anticipation of gaining entry to his live shows which featured many top class entertainers.

A young Stevie Wonder, who lived on 21st street, would come down on Wednesday evenings to show off his multi talented skills on harmonica, piano and drums. He could sing too!

The Gold Room was opened by Popcorn Wylie and the Mohawks.
