    Motown and Cancelled 'Releases'

I'm not sure that we have discussed this before as a general topic. It seems that Motown had an enormous volume of ready-to-release material that was eventually cancelled. The Supremes alone had Sing Ballads and Blues, the Disney album, There's a Place For Us and more.

So two topics for discussion: 1) I wonder if there is a definitive list of Motoen cancelled material [[this would not include material that was recorded but just remained unreleased), and 2) Did Motown indeed have a higher volume of cancelled material than other contemporary labels, or is it that due to our forum sleuths we just know more about the Motown cancelled material?

The only other one I can think of is MR&TV Copa album

Good Questions PHN! I don't think there's a definitive list of cancelled Motown releases [[but there should be one given the interest & high quality of material in the Motown Vaults). Not sure if Motown had more cancelled releases than any other company.

There were a lot, though I have no idea how it compares to other labels. Much of this material has been released through the years on various Universal labels [[such as Spectrum, Hip-O, Motown) as well as on Ace, Real Gone, etc.

Here are many of them, sourced from the following website [[which has a lot of great information on many labels, I recommend checking it out if you haven't already):

    http://www.bsnpubs.com/index.html

    http://www.bsnpubs.com/motown/motownstory.html

It's unclear in some of these cases whether any recording was done for the planned release; these are just catalogue numbers that were assigned. In many cases, though, we know that the album was recorded [[or partially recorded) because the material was released decades later.

There were also recordings made that don't appear in this list, perhaps because they were not assigned a catalogue number, for example MR&TV at The Copa. I guess Motown did a lot of live recording with an eye towards a possible, but not necessarily planned, album release.

There were also a number of catalogue numbers that seem to have been set aside for something, but this website does not indicate for what - perhaps that information was lost.

In my original post I only chose a selection of unreleased albums, but following posts by SatansBlues and PeaceNHarmony [[below) I added titles they mentioned plus many others. I tried to include all the unissued titles given on the bsn website through 1972. For later years, I only selected some titles, mainly those from well-known artists.

MT-602 - The Satintones Sing - The Satintones
MT-610 - The Supremes Sing Ballads and Blues - The Supremes
M-612 - Second Time Around - Mary Wells

MT-619 - My Son the Sit-In - Stepin Fetchit [[comedy)
MT-626 - The Supremes Recorded Live! - The Supremes. This record evidently came close to being released; a picture in the Supremes 25th Anniversary album booklet [[Motown 5381ML3) shows Marvin Gaye holding the album and talking to Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson.
    MT-628 - There's a Place for Us - Supremes
MT-635, MT-637 - A Tribute to the Girls - The Supremes. All finished tracks were released on the CD There's A Place For Us.
MT-640 - Live at Lake Tahoe - Billy Eckstine
MS-645 - Live at the Americana - Tony Martin
MT/MS-648 - Pure Gold - The Supremes [[apparently a compilation of hits)
MT/MS-656, MT/MS-658 - The Supremes and the Motown Sound from Broadway to Hollywood - The Supremes. All finished tracks were released on the CD There's A Place For Us.

There was also the Diana Ross & Supremes "Some Things You Never Get Used To" album. It was ultimately released as "Love Child," but the original line-up was actually better and more diverse.

I though I had heard talk here of a STYNGUT lp.

Speaking of STYNGUT, here's one 'reported' track listing [[which we may have discussed before ...) -

Some Things You Never Get Used To
    Heaven Must Have Sent You
    He's My Sunny Boy
    Come On And See Me
    Can I Get A Witness
You've Been So Wonderful To Me
    My Guy
    It's Not Unusual
    Just A Little Misunderstanding
    Uptight [[Everything's Alright)
What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted
    Blowin' In The Wind

Personally I find this track listing too covers-heavy as opposed to the Love Child album.

There's also Marvin Gaye's You're The Man, which Wikipedia lists as TM-316. This album was of course ultimately released 2 years ago but for our purposes fits in this discussion. AND ... there may be a Marvin Sanctified P!$$y lp which I think was being recorded as a follow-up to Midnight Love.

I like most of the songs individually. But as a package, it just seems thrown together and maybe even dated.

Was the G-960 Martha Reeves supposed to be a solo album or a group project?

Yes, I didn't include "You're The Man", just edited my post above to add it. Also I saw that there was a catalogue number given for a Marvin Gaye Christmas album for 1972.

I agree entirely; for me, the Love Child album, as released, is far superior and more defining as a Supremes album without leaning heavily on outside material.

It was apparently planned as a 1972 release, following the MR&TV Black Magic LP. No other information is given on that website and I didn't find anything elsewhere.

I believe that Martha & The Vandellas disbanded as a group following the "Black Magic" LP. Given that the planned title was "Martha Reeves", I would guess that this was intended to introduce her as a solo artist.

I think it was going to be called PURE GOLD and would have been their first greatest hits collection.

Yes: MT/MS-648 - Pure Gold - The Supremes

As I mentioned, I left out titles that look like compilations of already-released material. I thought this thread was more about cancelled projects of new material.

There were others that I deliberately left out for the same reason, such as:

TM-246 - Soul Supreme, Volume One - Various Artists
TM-247 - Soul Supreme, Volume Two - Various Artists

I will go back and add these to the list as, who knows, maybe these were planned to contain at least some new material.

As I recall, there were some from the 1970s that I also skipped for the same reason, such as:

    M6-836 S1 - Love Ballads - Various Artists
    M6-837 S1 - Mellow Moods - Various Artists

Impressive work, Calvin, and thank you. There was a ton of unreleased Chris Clark material; I wonder if any of that was ever assembled into an album-to-be?

Could be, there were a lot of catalogue numbers set aside for which there seems to be no information today.

After just digging out "The Motown Collection", the previously-unreleased tracks seem to be mostly recorded between 1965 and 1968, but spread out pretty evenly across those years. I don't see that, for example, there were a bunch of these tracks recorded within a single month or two, as one might expect for a planned LP.

CP Spencer was supposed to have cut an LP entitled “Goin’ For Myself” scheduled for Motown. It and the single “Still Holding On” was ultimately shelved. Looking forward to hearing it via MU 72-73. [[Hint Hint universal music group)

Hi sup_fan, please take a look at my post above - I think I have all of those you listed that were not issued except the Supremes' titles "Around the World" and "Some Things You Never...".

739 was the Sterling Ball Benefit. That album was issued and given to attendees of the ball as a special souvenir but not made available commercially. It was a compilation of already-released tracks made for a specific purpose, not really a cancelled project.

Others you listed were definitely released, though the catalogue number changed between planning and release [[eg Jackie Jackson from 757 to 785).

    M-785V1 - Jackie Jackson - Jackie Jackson [[1973)
T8-370M1 - Givin' All My Love - Tata Vega [[1980)
    6002TL2 - Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium [[1982)
    6001TL - Yes It's You Lady - Smokey Robinson [[1982)

Marvin Gaye at the Copa did have a number [[273) but was not issued until Hip-O Select released it on cd in 2005. I also listed it above.

I believe the Marvin/ Kim release was planned to be one side of Marvin with Kim and one side of Marvin and Mary Wells.

The Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson albums were released, but I don't know if they carried the same catalog # listed here.

The Marvin Copa album ended up being released years later by Motown Select.

Here are many of them, sourced from the following website [[which has a lot of great information on many labels, I recommend checking it out if you haven't already):

M-618 - Recorded Live! The Supremes on Stage - The Supremes. Recorded at the Greystone Ballroom in Detroit
MT-619 - My Son the Sit-In - Stepin Fetchit [[comedy)

Found this on the Supremes' "Around The World":

"Around the World with The Supremes was an unreleased project planned for The Supremes by Motown.

The album would've consisted of famous international songs such as "La Bamba," "C'est si bon," "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu [[Volare)" and "Never On Sunday."

Even though instrumental tracks were recorded for the album, it was never completed because the group never recorded any vocals on it."

You are right, I see the track listings are identical. I removed it from the list above.

December 23, 1972 was the Vandellas last concert

I believe that Martha & The Vandellas disbanded as a group following the "Black Magic" LP. Given that the planned title was "Martha Reeves", I would guess that this was intended to introduce her as a solo artist.

Is this albums only or are 45s included? There were tons of 45s that were assigned to a label and given a catalog number then canceled before release or withdrawn/deleted soon after.

My main interest is in full albums, but certainly 45s are an interesting subject in their own right -

Was this concert recorded by Motown? It would be interesting to hear the groups last concert together. Anyone ever come across a playlist for their last concert?

Ok, but a catalogue number assigned to Martha Reeves as the artist with an album title of "Martha Reeves" still sounds like a project to introduce her as a solo artist.

The catalogue number [[960) comes nearly right after the catalogue number for Black Magic [[958). I wonder if Reeves/Motown were already considering changes when Black Magic was being recorded?

When was the group's last studio recording?

I usually don't like to make this kind of statement, but I think it's been stated [[maybe by Martha herself?) that there was a solo lp in the planning. George or Ralph may be of help here.

i think it would have been an interesting album for the girls to do. the tracks were prepared in Dec 65 and some non-supremes backing vocals were recorded. apparently the song list included:

    La Bamba
    Never on sunday
    jamaica farewell
    C'est si bon
    Hava Nagila
    Danke Schoen
    Danny Boy
    Hawaiian Wedding Song
    Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport

sessions were produced by Hal Davis and Frank Wilson

i would like to hear them on the tunes but yeah, this would have been one of their oddest releases.

can't you see the parents of some fans, sitting in their living room with a couple friends over for cocktails. Rumaki is toothpicked to the pineapple and is on the dining room table along with a crockpot of cocktail wieners percolating in a gravy of chili sauce and grape jelly.

mother had done her "up do" with a couple of matching hairpieces. father is offering some Camels to the guests from a brass cigarette dispenser on the coffee table in front of the davenport. and then he walks over to the massive Zenith hi-fi and cues up this gem of a record! lololol

Melody 501 was allocated to Dorsey Burnette's eponymous album.

Perhaps, considering the Holland-Dozier-Holland/Supremes dilemma when More Hits was completed, the idea of creating an International Collection for The Supremes was inspired by the Petula Clark Sings The International Hits set from 1965.

According to notes accompanying the CD version of that recording project, after issuing two albums of mostly Pet Clark/Tony Hatch songs, “The demand for a rapid follow-up was enormous. Under this sort of pressure, it was unreasonable for the record company to expect the pair of them to be able to keep turning out hits, so it was decided to give the song-writing a break, and go instead for the ‘concept’ album, covering songs and standards made famous by other people…As Petula was by this time a star across Europe, much of Australasia, Canada , North and South America, such a concept was entirely appropriate…That the production is by Tony Hatch will probably surprise people who associate him with the brassy Motown influenced sounds which normally mark a Hatch production job.”

Songs on the Clark album were Never On A Sunday, You Can’t Keep Me From Loving You [[known instrumentally as Midnight In Moscow), What Now My Love, Why Don’t They Understand, Have I The Right, Volare, One More Sunrise, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Love Me With All Your Heart, The Boy From Ipanema, I [[Who Have Nothing) and Hello Dolly.

“No singles were taken from [the album], and it didn’t sell particularly well at the time.”

A cancelled release I'm really interested in is the album that Stevie Wonder was supposedly writing and/or producing for the Jackson 5 in the early 70s. Apart from the fact that they're my two favourite Motown artists, the one track that has seen the light of day from this collaboration - Buttercup from the J5 compilation I Want You Back - Unreleased Masters - is just fantastic. The gorgeous keyboard and soaring vocals on that made it an instant favourite for me. And begged the question... how is it that someone decided in the 70s that it wasn't worthy of release? And what happened to the rest?

Similarly, and just thinking of a track on its own, Tammi Terrell's version of All I Do is one of the sweetest sounding songs I've heard in my life and I will never understand why it languished in the vaults until A Cellarful of Motown in 2002. It takes a lot to better Stevie but that version is in another league, to my ears, from the one on Hotter Than July that I'd already known for years. How Tammi's version stayed unheard, I'll never understand.

Bizarre, strange, unfathomable, the list could go on describing the puzzling reason why this one [[and "My Heart" for that matter) couldn't even get onto the Irresistible album. Brenda Holloway also recorded a version. Was Motown thinking of earmarking her version for release? Motown felt Brenda did well with the slower/mid-tempo tunes. Was Tammi's so good that Motown freaked and just couldn't figure out where such a song would fit on Top 40's landscape? I keep going back to the fact that we judge these songs from the perspective of our times. Maybe things we feel sound like automatic hits were deemed too out of the ballpark for the times back then. Who knows. I do think though that the song is amazingly beautiful and actually, to borrow from what you said, a league apart from almost everything at Motown at that time.

My Heart was the B-Side to Carolyn Crawford's 45 When Somebody's Good To You in November 1964 and Tammi's version is just as good as Carolyn's released version. My running question has always been if Stevie recorded his own version in 65/66? DFTMC gives a hint that there may be a SW version also produced by Clarence Paul! I would love to hear that one day. I also wonder if there's a version of The Tears of a Clown done by SW since he is one of the co-writers of the song.

That does make sense when you think about things like Berry Gordy's initial reaction to What's Goin' On. Still, waiting 30 plus years for that song to be heard is almost criminal.

Can I ask where it hints that please?

Are you talking here of My Heart that's what your post seems to suggest however it seems you may have unwittingly changed horses mid stream so to speak and are talking about All I Do..

I was referring to the song All I Do Is Think About You. Sorry if that part was unclear. On DFTMC under the song there's an entry saying that SW recorded a version, dates unknown, but produced by Clarence Paul.
Have you heard Stevie's earlier version? And do you know if he recorded a studio version of The Tears of a Clown?
