You're welcome, Eddie! The Phil Spector International label has always meant a lot to me because it reissued my favorite Phil Spector productions -- the Philles recordings. And those two "Rare Masters" albums were like being graced with the Holy Grail!

I remember when I discovered the Phil Spector Intl. series, and purchased the first 7 volumes. I couldn't believe the "Rare Masters" sets. It was such a discovery to find all those hard to find titles and for the first time hear tracks like "Stumble and Fall" and others.

I also have the "Echoes of the 60s" which was my first Spector compilation I ever bought I believe. I think I had that one prior to the PSI "Yesterday's Hits- Today."

I never knew about the later "Masters" titles. Gary, which of these other LPs was a real find? I'm guessing the "Ronettes Greatest Hits Vol. 2." I can't imagine any of those tracks were easy to find before that, though from the album cover design it looks like the second Ronettes set came out later than the two "Rare Masters" albums. Is that right? Still, finding all those rare tracks together on one album must have been exciting.

Like the UK-only issue of "Martha and the Vandellas Greatest Hits Vol. 2," in those days I never had any idea that releases were different between the US and the UK. I always assumed albums were the same in both countries. Had I known about these albums back in the day, I would have searched for them. And back then, before the Internet [[yes, there was such a time) it was hard to find certain imported titles. You had to special order them, if you could even find a store that could find them for you.

Hey Kenny! I discovered the Phil Spector International Records series all at once in Fall of 1976 which, at that time, included the reissued LPs by The Crystals, The Ronettes, Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jean's, Various Artists "Yesterday's Hits Today", and, of course, the two V.A."Rare Masters" albums of which both were previously-unreleased Philles recordings. What a treat! I felt like a kid on Christmas morn! I bought the entire series all at once [[of the first batch)! It wasn't until years later that I discovered the rest of the PSI LP releases, most of which were available in the massive 9-LP "Wall Of Sound" box set [[pictured above). Naturally, I bought them all, but the most important to me in the second batch were Darlene Love's "Masters" [[which was her first-ever LP of her Philles recordings under her own name), and also The Ronettes "Greatest Hits [[Vol. 2)" which consisted mostly of "Rare Masters" tracks except for "I Can Hear Music", "Born To Be Together", and "Is This What I Get For Loving You" which were A-side Philles 45s, and "Lovers", which, at the time, was a newly-discovered unreleased Philles track [[post-"Rare Masters").

Yes, The Ronettes "Greatest Hits [[Vol. 2)" came out after the two "Rare Masters" albums.

Oh, and also, Kenny, back in the mid-70s, I shopped at a huge store in Rochester, NY, called House Of Guitars which specialized in Import LP releases as well as domestic LPs and musical instruments. It was mighty impressive -- almost like a warehouse -- and always busy with customers! I remember like it were yesterday -- something made me ask one of the clerks if there had been any recent Phil Spector releases. [[At that point, I had never heard of Phil Spector Intl. Records. A sixth sense made me ask about Phil. [[I've always been lucky with that extra sense.) The clerk said, "I think so. Let me go check." A couple minutes later, he returned with all 6 or 7 of the first batch of PSI LPs! What a thrill! I bought all of 'em and have been pleased as punch ever since!

I know, Kenny, those were the good old days! Did I ever tell you about the days when I attended business school in 1969 and 1970? I did all of my record shopping at a store in Geneva, NY, called the Geneva Coin, Stamp & Record Shop. The store owner's name was Charlie Ellis, but his nickname was Tilly. I'd go down to Tilly's nearly every day during my lunch break. We'd chat and I'd look through his newest Billboard magazine for the latest Motown releases for the week -- both singles and LPs. Every Wednesday, Tilly would go to the one-stop in Buffalo, NY, to pick up his records for the coming week. [[A one-stop was a warehouse where the record distributors would ship the latest releases from all of the record labels to be sent to the record stores in the surrounding region [[in this case, Buffalo, Rochester, and surrounding areas.) Tillie knew that I collected Motown, so he'd make it a point to pick up all of the latest Motown product for me. [[I had Tilly trained really well! Ha!!!) It was so cool having my own personal Motown supplier!

One week, Tilly even took me with him to the one-stop. It was cool, but somewhat disappointing. I had built up the one-stop in my mind to miraculously house an entire floor devoted to Motown, with nearly every record that Motown had ever released. As it turned out, the one-stop stocked only Motown's latest releases. Then it hit me that all of those earlier releases over the years had already been deleted, punched with bullet holes, and shipped out to the five-and-dime stores for the close-out bins. So, the Motown section of the one-stop was nothing like I had pictured, but it was still cool to see where my new Motown releases came from every week. Needless to say, I proudly returned home with a bagful of new Motown product!

Those days are long gone, but, you know, now that we're older, I'm just as happy to place my orders from the comfort and safety of my home PC or my Smartphone.

As long as we're on the subject, before we had Amazon and eBay for our online vinyl and CD shopping, do you remember "CD Now"? That used to be THE place to order online CDs. They eventually got absorbed into Amazon where they went from having a great CD selection to having an outstanding selection including import CDs. Funny how times have changed while we were growing up. Unfortunately, today's young music lovers will never know the joy that we experienced. We were really lucky to have grown up when we did.

What a great collection of music on those LPs! You're lucky to have them. Ever since learning here that Phil Spector arranged the music for the Beatles long and winding road , I've had a new appreciation for the song which I already liked a lot anyway.
Too bad there isn't someway to hear the Mark stein [[ vanilla fudge ) version on 45 of the song as listed here. I see it wasn't actually produced by Phil Spector but there must be some connection between choosing it as a song and it being released on specters label .
In reading wall of pains excerpt about it [[yes I do my homework !) it's described as alarmingly bombastic.
Any thoughts about it?

Hi John! Yeah, the Phil Spector Intl. label was exciting! In the middle of the Disco era, in which I was fully engulfed, PSI renewed my interest in Phil Spector, and it gave me brand new fresh copies of those beloved Philles tracks to replace my old, original, worn-out Philles copies. PSI also brought a renewed public interest in Phil Spector. The music industry which had turned it's back on Phil just 10 years earlier, was now talking about him in a positive light as it had done during Philles heyday of 1962-1963. I think the two "Rare Masters" albums of previously-unreleased Philles material is what did it.

I have no idea what the Mark Stein record sounds like. I didn't even know that he was a member of Vanilla Fudge. Those white rock bands from the '60s were way out of my league, so I would have never identified with Mark Stein nor even recognized his name. [[Good thing you're always on your toes, Boogie!) I, too, was disappointed that there were no audio clips for his "Long And Winding Road", "Killing Me Softly", nor "The Best Years Of My Life", although, if it wasn't produced by Phil, I doubt very much if I would have liked them anyway. Still would have been nice to hear them, though.

Let's not forget it was Mark Stein who successfully took The Supremes YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON to a very distant experience.

To attach my own experiences with One Stops: I worked for a couple or three years at an independent record store in San Francisco and we used a particular one stop out of Oakland, across the bay. Most product you bought from the majors , as you got a better price buying direct. But smaller labels' product , you got either from a middleman like PRT that represented a conglomerate of some of these independents , including Motown, or if that didn't work , through a one stop. Sometimes the hottest record of the moment could be on a small label , THE PLANET DOESNT MIND by X-Visitors comes to mind, and you needed that one stop as your only source . We used our one stop [[Record Merch?) for three main reasons: Product not found anywhere else, product from a label we weren't currently ordering from [[ might be a billing issue or not enough product to bother with an order) or if a product was really hot and the true source was zeroing out our orders. You better believe we'd rather pay a couple of dimes more for THRILLER that not have it in the store. And believe it or not there were occassions when CBS had none to ship! It always made me wonder how many more sales of that LP went uncounted for that reason.
It always struck me as a rough outfit, always pictured the guy from the one stop puffing on a cigar when he'd call our store demanding payment. They were always sticklers on the returns we'd try to dump on them too, haha. They were our last chance to get a credit sometimes on records that stiffed.
Once in awhile we'd actually drive over to pick up a box or two , especially if we were desperate for hot product. A records shelf life could be like raw shellfish , only desirable and saleable until its limited expiration date. I remember being most unimpressed by this small anonymous unkempt warehouse in the worst part of Oakland dispersing the country's hottest music.

Hey John! By golly, you're right! I, too, tested "Mark Stein Spector", and that "long and winding road" led to my doorstep! This isn't the first time I've been surprised by that, either.
Kinda cool in a way, but not sure I like THAT much exposure. Keeping a low profile as I do, I don't mind sharing my music and my feelings with the fans here on SDF/Motown Forum, but knowing that the entire world is in on it is a bit intimidating to me. Oh, well, too late now! The damage is already done!

Ya know, I used to resent Vanilla Fudge's version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" because I felt they were bastardizing Motown, but now that I hear it again, I kinda like it! Those male background vocal harmonies are fantastic! Funny how our tastes can change over the years! So Mark Stein is the lead singer, eh? Gotta admit, I like his voice, too -- at least on this song, although these guys are a bit hard to watch! Their body movements and mannerisms are way exaggerated and overly-animated.

So, you, too, had some involvement with a one-stop! Doesn't surprise me at all! HaHa!!! I knew that record companies oftentimes had trouble getting paid by distributors, and, in order to get paid for their current hit, they had to threaten the distributor by refusing them their next big record. Not wanting to be left out of the record company's next hit, the distributor would back down and fork over the money owed to the record company. But I wasn't aware that the one-stops had a history of trying to screw the record stores. I suppose it's typical that nobody wants to refund money if they don't have to. I guess one-stops were no exception. I didn't know that stores could return unsold product and get reimbursed for it. That's news to me.

Until now, I had never heard the original bare-bones version of Paul McCartney's "Long And Winding Road", although I knew it existed. It's kind of pretty, but I much prefer Phil Spector's sweetening which is downright lovely.

Yeah, Boog, the Richard Hewson Orchestra made some fine Disco records -- "What Shall We Do When The Disco's Over", "Shark Bite" [[Horse Meat Disco version), the slow and beautiful "Right Side Of Midnight", etc. All good stuff from the U.K., if I recall.

Yes, labels were always offering incentives , discounts in one way or another, the unfairness there was to Mom and Pop stores who didn't have the purchase power to meet certain minimums to get the best deals. You always had a certain percentage of returns you were allowed, but they had to be timely [[ sometimes we'd try to slip expired records to the one stop . Often they'd come right back in the next shipment). lol! Sometimes [[ if I'm remembering correctly) if a label really wanted to guarantee high preorders of a certain artist's release [[ so it could enter Billboard in the Top 10 for one reason) and to prove how hot a release it was, they'd offer a 100% return guarantee [[ order away!) Of course Tower Records, which could afford the money upfront and with nothing to loose, could order a mountain of copies which they'd proudly display in an impressive store display.
Wasn't it Kisses four individual members solo LPs that "shipped gold and got returned platinum"? lol.
I just thought of another reason for using the one stop , it's as you mentioned Gary, 45's. We had to have at least a weekly supply of 45s from all those labels, the one stop was the main source for the latest from all of them.

Hi Kenny, not being a Beatles fan, I've never heard the stripped-down version of the "Let It Be" album, but, from what I've read in the Phil Spector biographies, the session tapes that The Beatles handed over to Phil were a mess. Each of the Beatles had outgrown the group, obsessing instead on their newfound solo careers. To make matters worse, John and Paul were barely speaking. Tension at the recording sessions was running high, and not much music was coming together. The Beatles knew it was the end, and they wanted to leave their fans with one last album, yet none
of them could face piecing it all together. This was where they called Phil in to work his magic. Phil accomplished exactly that. He took the bare bones that were handed him and turned it into a highly successful seller. Of course, at first, Beatles fans bitched and pissed & moaned that Phil ruined The Beatles by adding horns and strings. Now that those same fans have had a chance to hear what little Phil was given to work with, they've admitted that he did a great job. Other than McCartney, The Beatles were pleased with what Phil had come up with, as he did exactly what they had hired him to do.

I understand that the Beatles breakup was happening then , but it still seems odd they each would divorce themselves from final involvement in the final product that would bear their name??
I'd reckon that neither George nor John were too displeased with Phil's results as each sought him out later for further work . Seems mainly Paul bitched , but here's Spector's response concerning that:

Did Phil sell the "River Deep - Mountain High" album to A&M? Not that I know of, smallworld. At least, I've never read that he did. He really had no reason to. Herb Alpert gave Phil carte blanche to record whomever he wanted and to release whatever he wanted on A&M. There was no need to sacrifice ownership of anything on Phil's part. As far as reissue of the "River Deep" album is concerned, there may or may not have been a stipulation as to what label it must be reissued on, but, again, that's mere speculation. I've never read anything regarding the ownership of "River Deep" changing hands from Phil to A&M. I DO remember discovering -- long after the fact -- that Hipo-Select had reissued the "River Deep" album on CD, but, by the time I discovered it, it was long out of print. It would be interesting to know who Hipo leased it from [[whether it be from Phil himself or from whomever owns A&M's recordings). Over the years, record companies we once knew and loved have since been gobbled up by larger conglomerates to the point it's hard to know who owns what any more.

Come to think of it, Sony Legacy issued the "Phil Spector Philles LP Collection" CD box set back in 2011 [[God, has it been 8 years already?), which most likely means that Sony controls the Philles catalog now. The "River Deep" album was NOT included in that set, nor were the Righteous Brothers' 3 Philles albums which are owned by Polydor. Maybe A&M does own rights to Tina's album. Good question.

Yes, the three Japanese-import Righteous Brothers CDs were perfect in that they contain both the Mono AND Stereo versions of their Philles albums. They sound fantastic!!! Would have been nice had they followed suit with "River Deep" in both Mono and Stereo.
