A lot of it came about because they screw with the sound on CDs. Too much compression is being used.

Is this based on new albums released on vinyl selling, or older reissues on vinyl, what? Could a record company succeed these days by only releasing stuff on vinyl?

No, they could not. Downloads account for the largest piece of the pie today.

Thomas, I think that the current vinyl sales are a combination of what you say -12" dance [[as in the past), some new groups who want to release singles and albums on vinyl for the 'old feeling', plus a fair number of re-pressings of albums that came out in the past. As soulster says I don't think a company could survive on vinyl only - having said that, there may be a few 'vinyl only' releases for certain specialist releases/genres.

As soulster also says downloads account for the largest share compared to physical in the US [[57% download v 43% physical in 2012), but in the UK physical is still ahead [[59% physical v 41% download in 2012), but the balance is expected to switch by the end of the year in the UK too - mainly tipped by the problems faced by the last remaining high street music store HMV.

Again some figures from the UK - 2.9million vinyl albums have been sold in the first six months of the year! That's a 33.5% increase. But vinyl sales are still only 2% of albums sales overall [[142m) during the six months.
