My family history is in the Gospel field.
I had a couple minor hits in the late 1960's.
I have 3 famous singers as relatives as well.

    Name my family's group?
    Name my 3 famous relatives?
Name a big hit I had in 1967 on the R&B charts?

    WHO AM I?

Of course! "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" was much earlier than 1967 [[1965).I met Dee Dee near the end of the 1970s. She was a good friend of one of my partners at Airwave Records.

That's nice, Robb. Call me crazy but I liked her voice better than her sister's. .
She was on the quiet side at Jimmy's show, sat quietly talking with Jimmy.
    So sad we lost her.

I wouldn't call you crazy. I also liked Dee Dee better as a singer than Dionne. Dee Dee had more of a soulful delivery, while Dionne was more poppish.

One member of our group was murdered, one is missing, and one became a cop. We had a really groovy hip record in 1966, followed by an equally great cover of one of our labelmates hits. Had a successful tour in 1966.

    Name our Label?
    Name our manager?
Name 2 of our famous labelmates?
Name the 2 songs in question?

    WHO ARE WE?

Well SS .. you had me stumped there for a little while .. the group has to be THE CAPITOLS, as I recall hearing that one of their members was murdered and a little research uncovered the fact that another one joined the Highland Park Police, but neither of their two biggest hits [["Cool Jerk" and "We've Got a Thing That's In The Groove") were previously done by a label mate as far as I'm aware!! But then I found out that the "B" side of "Cool Jerk" was their version of "Hello Stranger", which had previously been recorded by their label-mate BARBARA LEWIS, [[I've never owned "Cool Jerk" on a 45 so this was news to me).

So .. my answers are ..

    Name our Label? - KAREN
Name our manager? - OLLIE McLAUGHLIN
Name 2 of our famous labelmates? - BARBARA LEWIS and BETTY LAVETTE [[or alternatively DEON JACKSON who's releases came out on Karen's sister-label Carla).
Name the 2 songs in question? "Cool Jerk" and "Hello Stranger"

    Roger

P.S. A bit of interesting trivia for you .. back in the '60s their releases came out on the Atlantic label in the U.K. under the name of THE THREE CAPS as can be seen here ...

I can't stump you, Roger. LOL!!! You are correct.
Labelmates [[or should I say stablemates, lol, in Ollie's stable) on tour were Barbara Lewis & Deon Jackson.
Two songs were the two-sided hit of "Cool Jerk" & "Hello Stranger" the B-side cover of Barbara's hit.

Didn't know that about Atlantic & the U.K.

We are from Houston, Texas. We had some of the best soul ballads in the 1968 era.
    Name 3 of those records?
    Name the lead singer?
    Name the group?

I'm assuming you mean THE MASQUERADERS .. but although I know they had some Houston connections most of their biographies say they were formed in Dallas.

Assuming that the answer is THE MASQUERADERS then the answers would be ..

    THE THREE RECORDS ...

Perm three from the following ..

"I Don't Want Nobody to Lead Me On" .. "I'm Just An Average Guy" .. "How Big Is Big" .. "I Ain't Got To Love Nobody Else"

THE LEAD SINGER .. I think was CHARLES MOORE

    And the group ... ?????

The three records I had in mind were:
    "No Man Is An Island"
    "Never Let Me Go"
    "I Have To Go On"

Who were the musicians on our recordings?
    Name our record label?
Name "5" of our hits from the mid 1960's soul era?
    Name our lead singer?

Well S.S. .. After discounting that you could be talking about THE DETROIT EMERALDS, on the basis that was TOO obvious , I followed a couple of hunches and checked the booklet notes for this C.D. ..

    http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-E.../dp/B00000809T

And it seems that the group started out as THE EMERALDS ..

    So my answers are ..

Who were the musicians on our recordings?
    BOOKER T & THE M.Gs [[presumably)

    Name our record label?
    STAX/VOLT

Name "5" of our hits from the mid 1960's soul era?
    "Don't Have To Shop Around"
    "I Want A Girl"
    "Patch My Heart"
    "I Want Someone"
    "Whatever Hurts You"

    Name our lead singer?
    JOHN GARY WILLIAMS

The group is/was THE MAD LADS ..

I sang with a group in the 1950's, have an edgy quality to my voice.
Made some great solo records in the mid 60's, one well-known record that charted on the R & B radio stations.
    Name that group?
    Name that hit record?
Name the label that record was on?
Name at least two of my solo ballads?

That' why I love this site as I've become smug in my knowledge of music. Soul Sister, you clued me in on Timothy Wilson years ago and when he was performing on PBS with the Teenagers, I was schooling folks saying he's the guy who sang Queen of Hearts. I also like Baby, Baby Please. [[Only Queen of Hearts got played in Philly.) Now I'm going to youtube to listen to Just Another Guy and Sammy Ambrose who I must admit I never heard of.

    Hi Nosey,
Yep, I used to wear the jukebox out Summer of 1967 with Tim's "Baby Baby Please" and later "Say It Again", which is my favorite for the feeling he puts into it.
He told me 3 decades later that "Say It Again" was also his favorite of all the songs he's ever recorded! How cool is that, I was blown away!

Sammy was a fabulous "live" performer you had to see his show, you would have love him instantly.

Any guesses on my latest Artist in question?

    Here's the answer ~

    1950's Group was THE PEARLS
Hit Record: "You Better Go" on the Sue Label.
Nice Ballads: "You Blew It", "Your Daddy Wants His Baby Back", & his cover of "I Won't Cry Anymore"...[[one of my all-time favorite versions along with Jimmy Scott's on Roost in1951, and Big Maybelle's moving version!!!)

I am DEREK MARTIN [[Great edgy voice, very underrated talented singer!!) ~

    New Game ~
I am a blue-eye soul singer with much success in concerts, singer, musician, songwriting, liner notes and productions of other artists, television, movies, soundtracks, still going strong today. My mother was a singer on the Perry Cuomo television show.

    Name of my old group?
Name two hits one from the 1960's and one from the 1980's that blew up?
Name a controversional thing that hapenned during my Apollo appearance in 1968?
Name some other artist liner notes I wrote?
Name a famous t.v. show that used my song and who was singing it?
    Name one Artist I produced?
What type of music am I doing today?

I guess this game is now de-funked since no ones knows soul music history for the 1960's, lol, seems like only Roger does.

    Answers to latest Artist ~

    * Old group: The Beaters
    * Biggest Hit from the 60's: "Storybook Children" a duet with Judy Clay.
    * Hit from the 80's: "At This Moment".
    * Apollo: When Billy & Judy appeared on stage they came out holding hands and she was pregnant. The audience loudly gasped! Naturally, everyone assummed Billy was the father, which was controverial in those days [[1968). Actually, Judy's husband was back stage.
    * Billy wrote liner notes on "lots" of albums, naming two "Jimmy Scott & Paul Gayten".
    * Famous T.V. Show that used his song "At This Moment" was "Family Ties" sung by "The Manhattans".
    * Name of one of the many Artists he produced "Lou Rawls".
    * Music I am doing today: "Big Band".

    * Who Am I?: BILLY VERA
