Artic Records Story - Cooler Than Ice

I want this! Sounds like a great collection, but I know very little about Artic Records. Can anyone tell me if their output was consistently good? I know not every single can be a hit, but if the quality and talent are there, I will definitely pick this up.

The set is expensive for a label that is basically not as well known as Stax, Motown or Atlantic.

I have the same question about this set. The only records on Arctic I've seen are those by Barbara Mason. I think she was the label's most successful artist. But I could be wrong.

Yes, Barbara Mason was their biggest artist. My suggestion is to look up the titles listed on that site and check for them on Youtube and listen to see if you like the rest. I'll probably buy it since I was raised in the Philly area and love all this music. It's much cheaper on Amazon, but they are out of stock so far.

OH!!! I just discovered that if you click on each one of the titles on the Jamie Guyden site linked to in the first post, a sample of every song plays and they are long samples at 1:30. Nice. I found some things I don't have yet on my other Jamie Guyden CDs. I'm buying it but I'm certainly not paying $160.00 for it. I'll wait till it's in stock on Amazon.

Thanks for the feedback. It's even cheaper at importcds.com. I've purchased a few things on this site and never had a problem. They currently have it for around $90.

As far as I know, ARCTIC Records were started by Jimmy Bishop, a popular dj and record
produce in Philadelphia. Barbara Mason was the only artist I remember having
national hits. However, the Ambassadors were also on this label as well as
Miami's Della Humphrey.
Kenny Gamble and his backup group the Romeos may have had a single or two
issued on Arctic.

OK, sorry, I missed a few items above. Gamble IS acknowledged! The product discription
on amazon does not give a track listing as far as I see. The description does , however,
mention, the Volcanos and Della Humphrey as well as the Ambassadors.

Arctic had a lot of good quality Soul released on them. Arctic had Barbara Mason, The Volcanos, The Ambassadors, Kenny Gamble & Romeos, Honey & The Bees, Della Humphry, Billy Floyd, Light Lunch & Freeloaders and many more good artists. I'm sure that CD would be worth the price to most of you.

The price has come down $35.00 on the JamGuy site linked to in the original post. It had been $159 or $160.

Not thrilled that those 12 extra songs are on 45s. My record players are not hooked up, so I couldn't play them anyway. Wish they had put them on the CDs.

From an historical perspective, it's great to see this set released. While I like the idea of the 45s, wIth things being as they are these days [[most of us having disconnected our turntables), it might not be the most practical thing to have done unless those tracks are also included as CD tracks.

A lot of those titles are songs that I've never heard before & for me, if the booklet gives good biographical info about the lesser-known artists as well as recording/release dates, that would be another selling point.

But as pointed out, that price tag is VERRRRRRRRY STEEP for a 6 CD box set. I own all 3 Stax box sets consisting of 9, 9 & 10 cds + booklets, as well as the Atlantic R&B series & the individual price of each didn't approach this price & I don't believe that I've ever seen a more extensive booklet that the Stax booklets.

Whil I definitely wish them well, I believe that they're goig to cost themselves a lot of potential sales. In this day & age, limited edition 45s notwithstanding, $125 for a 6 CD set is likely to prove to be a little too steep for many of their fans. Especially considering that many potential buyers of this set are unfamiliar with a few of the artists & tracks.

Nevertheless, I wish them success with this set & also wish that other labels would begin getting unissued & releases which never was released on CD & begin releasing their own complete discographies at a reasonable price.
