Oh no. This is awful news. We recently incorporated updates into her autobiography and have just a few photos to fix to finish it after the holiday.

We closed 2012 production with all the new material added. Now we need to incorporate an afterword and maybe some tributes and also consider the wishes of Marva's family. I know the book has been a long time coming, but Marva surprised us all by going back on tour.

I've been avoiding any threads about the loss of our beloved music icons. Personally, I've met many of them, have come to know many of them & in a relatively short span of time, I've had to say goodbye to way too many people whom I grew fond of.

Marva's different because I never got to meet her & I don't recall her being in my area in recent years & I regret having never been able to meet her, if only to say thanks.

It was early 1969 & my sisters & I were driving in a caravan from James Brown's house on 175th Pl. & Linden Blvd, on our way to James' appearance that afternoon at the RKO Albee. We rode from St. Albans, Queens all the way to downtown Brooklyn with a police escort blaring their sirens all the way.

When we arrived at the Albee, we went to the dressing room & naturally, James had his own room. SO we hung out with Clay Tyson, Danny Ray & a very pretty young lady who we knew only from her records. She had a huge afro & a very sweet demeanor & she asked us if we wanted some of her chicken.

She was very nice to us kids & spoke with us until it was time for her to get dressed for her segment of the show. It's ironic that even though I was the hugest of James Brown's fans [[at least I thought so), the only thing that ever remained with me about that day was being backstage speaking with Marva Whitney & Clay Tyson. I don't remember a thing about the concert.

I alwyas wanted to relive that day with Marva & thank her for treating 3 little kids with kindness. Sadly, that will never come to pass. So I guess that all that's left is to thank the young lady with that huge afro & strong voice for the music that she leaves behind, as well as to lament the fact that she should've been much bigger musically. She deserved to be much bigger but sadly, the careers of 99.9% of the ladies who worked with my musical hero seemed to have chafed under his direction & that's truly a sad thing to have to admit.

Marva, thank you for the music, thank you for the memories & may you rest in peace always.

My condolences to her family, friends & fans & fortunately, she has countless fans the world over who have always appreciated her talents & at the very least, it's gratifying to know that she knew the respect that a whole lot of us had for her & her music.
