Aaarrggh ! The over-use of 'like' in conversations...

I dont generally talk to people under thirty,I dont really know any teenagers Im an older drag queen now- I go on the bus everyday to work and pick up bits from other people conversation as Im sitting there Ive noticed,and Im alarmed at teenagers and the way they speak to each other - Its not cussing but the use of like- Ive just had to listen to this kind of babble -

Girl one :"I was like walking down like the street and like I saw this bird like land infront of me and I was like thats like a huge like bird then I noticed like the bread on like the footpath and I was like its gonna like that totally like.."

Girl two:Oh my god!like im so like scared of birds Im like I find them like creepy

Girl One:Totally Im like that is like the biggest like bird I ever like saw...

...and on it goes!! has anyone else noticed this disturbing trend in language or does it just happen in my part of the world?[[New Zealand)If this a global trend - how did it start? where will it end? Is it the end of humankind- I want to scream every time I hear people doing it is it because their lazy? What are their teachers teaching them? can anyone explain or am I just not hip to these cats speak?
Do they text each other and use all those likes or is it because the spoken word is losing the battle to technology..somebody help me out..

Thats a hell of a list Grapevine - most kids I hear on the bus are too illiterate to know most of those words! I had a teacher in my shop yesterday who told me kids can text each other while their phones are in their pockets without evening looking at them! I firmly believe theres a link between technology,the texting curse and poor language use..

"Going forward" is used in offices to silence disgruntled workers,Its usually used by people in human resources.."Going Forward" was used alot when i worked at a lawfirm- it nullifys a conversation someone dosent want to deal with..

I was just thinking about that this morning when a young woman that was being interviewed on my local TV station kept talking like that. It annoyed the heck out of me.

The word "axed" is prevalent in many, many R&B and Soul songs. One notable Motown example is when Mary Wells slips it in on the third "asked" of "You Beat Me To The Punch"--

"...and axed me to be yours"

One word commonly misused these days that does bother me is "seen", for "saw"...As in; "I *seen* him coming out of the store." My daugher says this all the time. It makes me crazy.

WOW! Where have I been? I haven't heard any of this. My social circle gets a kick out of this. My mother's friend says it [[along with a bunch of other split verbs) and to me it sounds so ignorant---or should I say ignint? LOL!

I hate the phrase "skill-set".

Annoys the hell out of me. It's kinda like trying to make something simple sound like rocket scientry. Kinda like calling someone a sanitation engineer.

i dont generally talk to people under thirty,i dont really know any teenagers im an older drag queen now- i go on the bus everyday to work and pick up bits from other people conversation as im sitting there ive noticed,and im alarmed at teenagers and the way they speak to each other - its not cussing but the use of like- ive just had to listen to this kind of babble -

girl one :"i was like walking down like the street and like i saw this bird like land infront of me and i was like thats like a huge like bird then i noticed like the bread on like the footpath and i was like its gonna like that totally like.."

girl twoh my god!like im so like scared of birds im like i find them like creepy

...and on it goes!! Has anyone else noticed this disturbing trend in language or does it just happen in my part of the world?[[new zealand)if this a global trend - how did it start? Ax grates me and I used behavior modification on my children when they were younger to stop them from saying ax. I used to karate chop them everytime they said it and they thank me to this day. Ebonics has it's place but not in the workplace. I hate when people say Like-did, love-did, looked did, etc., saying spaded instead of spay and one of my all time hates is when people say squash instead of quash; as in quashing the issue. Grrrr......

Two more things: folks who misquote scripture. For example being clothed in my right mind. Actually its I am clothed AND in my right mind. Also when Black folks want to prove scriptually that God is Black by saying his hair is like lamb's wool when it actually says his hair is as white as lambs wool as white as snow. It speaks to the hair color and not the texture.
