    "I Hear a Symphony" LP

What tracks by The Supremes were recored during the same time period as those found on the "I Hear a Symphony" LP but not actually included on the album? Perhaps they were released in later years, however.

    Thanks!

I am now assuming that there are no unreleased tracks from the IHAS period ... i.e., everything that was recorded during this period was released on THERE'S A PLACE FOR US. Right?

OK so it's a month away [[OK a month from Sunday) and now that Music Tap has let the "Symphony" out of the bag, can we have a set list please? Harry? Andy? I have always thought this LP had some of the worst sound mixing of any Motown release and the AAD release when it was a two fer with WDOLG didn't do anything to improve that.

I will leave the track list up to Universal to post when ready.
This set has great bonus tracks with surprises. I know WE were surprised when we found them and listened... Another real plus for this set is finally the entire stereo LP is in stereo! Even when it was originally released in 1966 only 5 of the 12 tracks were in stereo. We just discovered a complete stereo mix of the album that has been sitting in the vaults all these years. We can't explain why they didn't use this because it's beautiful. We're even speculating that it could have been a mistake.
More info will be revealed soon.
October 9th, huh? Gee, I didn't know that, myself. I'm glad I read the boards today!

Thanks George for you weighing in. looks like another great release.

George, thank you for giving us some info on the release! I am soooo anxious to hear this album FINALLY in stereo. It always amazed [[& frustrated) me that the audio mix on this album was so bad. It seemed [[to my ear) like the strings had been added to the mix from a small transistor radio in the corner of the room! Highly anticipitating this! Does that mean "Symphony" is going to be be released before "Baby It's Me?" I kinda thought it would be the other way around considering the previous release schedules. Looking forward to both of these. Hary, Andy, George, Kevin...You guys do an fantastic job!!!

This is great news! Because any song that can make Brian Holland pull over his car as the song was playing on the radio because of the simplicity of, but yet profoundness of his brother Eddies Lyric for the title track is a new release I am very interested in. Bravo, to all associated with this project. Then there is the promise of "goodies " being available, well this is a good day, made even better. This was one of my first LP's that came into my possession. Six years after it's release date, my sister deemed it not important enough to take with her to college, so I became the caretaker.

Not being blessed with the fanciest music system back then, even as a young lad, I knew that there was an issue with the sound quality, therefore the idea of having the whole collection in stereo is great.

I have said this before but for me the best thing about those 60's Motown LP s was, in addition to the hits, the "standards". I could deal with "A Stranger In Paradise", on a Supremes LP, and for me the biggest payoff is that I developed an interest and an appreciation for all music, with the barometer being, is it good or bad.

    Looking forward to this project!

Hmm.........., I can see that being tried, a la the Tempts "Ain't Too Proud To Beg " with strings on Lost and Found, being not released in favor of the version we know which is much more direct than the version with strings.

I like that this album is loved by so many and it's also been one of their biggest selling LP's over the years.
As far as I know "My World Is Empty" always had strings but wait till you hear the mix where Mary and Flo are as prominent as Diana! In fact there are some really great alternates here.

Now that is the mix I have been waiting for! I've heard the mix on the Motown Remixed CD from several years ago where they slowed it down and changed the instrumental track. I'd like to hear Mary and Flo's vocals pumped up along with the original backing track.

Always loved My World Is Empty. Have heard several times that Florence was not on this one. I can't imagine why but can anyone verify? George said you can hear Mary and Florence as well as Diana, so I assume she was on it. I even heard it was Barbra McNair at one point. The rumors fly!

IHEA is now listed on Amazon for an October 9th release, too!!!!! There is no track listing yet, but this is a step in the right direction.

p.s. If you cannot find it, it's actually listed as I Heard a Symphony.

Funny you should say that George. I always thought of "My World Is Empty Without You" as the first solo single by Diana Ross! The Supremes sound like they're in another room down the hall!

I am pretty certain that "heard" vs. "hear" is simply a typo by whomever input the information. The listing does indeed indicate Hip-O as the record label. Also, you are right: It says "1Disc," but that has been stated before for other Hip-O releases when they appear on Amazon.

Therefore, I hope that all is well! :-)

That was my reaction when I first heard the 45 first when it was released.
Here's a mix without their mikes turned down. Check out the look on Mary's face. So out of character for her. Usually, she puts her all in a performance and she was the one to watch in every Supremes configuration. But in this video , she's just going through the motions as if she is pissed off about something. Listen to the end. Mary and Flo's mikes are turned high.

Great video! If I'm mistaken please correct me but I understand that is some of the very little footage that exists [[that we know about) of action in the "snakepit" [[the nickname for the main Motown studio) - even so, my guess is they're lip-syncing in this clip for filming convenience but I could easily be wrong...

All will be revealed October 9. We tell the story of the album, of the stereo mixes, and in the timeline we discuss the Anatomy Of Pop special [[video posted above). Plus surprises we've not yet addressed. Look for the official press release this week from Hip-O Select!

I Heard A Symphony also including:

    Baby Loved
Stopped In The Name Of Love
    Came Saw About Me
    The Happened

I look forward to seeing the track listing for the alternate versions of the Detroit recorded songs. This may be enough for me to buy the album.

Yes Mary does seem subdued though she and Flo's facial expressions more appropriate to the lyrics they are singing.

Although if they are trying to convey the mood of a recording session maybe they are showing concentration on their vocals rather than emoting for a camera as they would probably do for a LIVE television broadcast. That was my thought.

To correct carole cucumber, All of A Sudden My Heat Sings was intended for album called The Supremes & The Motown Sound: From Broadway To Hollywood. As For Let The Music Play, this song was recorded Jun 21/66 long as IHAS was released
Feb 18/66. Mister Sandman is the only track ever released from IHAS sessions.

There was an extended version of Everything is Good About You with an additional verse to the song which was released on Playlist + Plus CD which I hope is included on the new release. Also an alternate Lead Vocal of I Hear A Symphony can be found on The Motown Singles Collection Vol 5 which differs from the single that was released.

Dr. Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine was recorded in 65 but don't know if it might be recorded around the same time. Does anyone know when it was recorded?

I suppose you'd better tell Andy Skurow & Harry Weinger that they got it wrong.
The booklet for 'There's A Place For Us' says that bonus track #18 "All Of A Sudden My Heart Sings" was recorded in New York November 22, 1965; lead November 29, 1965; backgrounds December 2, 1965; during the sessions for the album 'I Hear A Symphony". Bonus tracks #19-26 scheduled for release on the unfinished album ''The Supremes And The Motown Sound : From Broadway To Hollywood" Motown 656

In "Let The Music Play: Supremes Rareties, Disc 1 track 26 "Let The Music Play [[Alternate Vocal)- Track recorded in Los Angeles, November 16, 1965; backgrounds recorded June 13, 1966; lead vocal June 15,1966; additional backgrounds June21,1966.
'The track for the Supremes was recorded during the sessions for I Hear A Symphony" where it would have fit beautifully, but the girls vocals weren't added until"Supremes A' Go-Go". The original version was finally issued on 'Let The Sunshine In" album in 1969, but yet another vocal version was in the vault'

Again , The booklet for "There's Place For Us" sets the record straight.
''Mister Sandman" Track recorded June 16, 1965; Dub-in on June 17, 1965; strings added July 2, 1965. Recorded during sessions for the unfinished album "A Tribute To The Girls"

Sorry but I was reading my notes incorrectly. It was All Of A Sudden My Heart Sings Instead of Mister Sandman that was the only IHAS session. Thanks for letting me know. Andy & Harry got it right.

As only the backing track was done during the sessions and no Lead or backup vocals were done, it was not complete in time for the album. But I do agree that it would have fit perfectly with the album if the vocals were recorded in time.

Always loved "Let The Music Play" and thought it would have been much better to release than "The Composer". I didn't know back then it was a DMF song. On those later albums I knew there were differences on the background vocals at the time but brushed it off as there was no way then to find out. Doesn't matter anymore, to me it's always The Supremes.
