Marvin Gaye "Side By Side" Tamla T-260

I've just lernt that this album was discused on here a while ago, and have done a search but can't find it. Apparently this album wasn't just Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston, but also featured Mary Wells, and Harry Weinger posted a track listing. Does anyone still have that track listing, and can they post it back up on here please.

Of the 7 Marvin and Kim tracks available only 2 were recorded within the time frame. With the 3 Marvin and Mary songs plus the 5 Marvin and Oma sides and maybe a couple of the "It Takes Two" tracks could have been used. I had always seen it listed as a MG & KW. album so this is a very pleasant surprise and will be good to get it cleared up. A great question, well done Stone Diamond!

Heres a pic of a Tamla single mentioning this album. It lists the title as "Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston Side By Side" Tamla 260.

    Thanks,
I guess in 1964 their intention was to issue a Gaye/Weston Lp that never came to fruition.
I know that in recent years there has been discussion about how this Lp was actually to be a compilation; coming only months after Motown 615 - Marvin Gaye and Mary Wells "Together" that seems strange.

Anyway the single wasn't a big hit, so they held up the album till 1966 when "It Takes Two" was a success on mainstream AM radio here and released it as Tamla 270 "Take Two". I even have it on an Ampex reel to reel tape that was issued at the time.

Interesting that years later [['69 or '70) "Marvin Gaye and HIs Girls" was released using the compilation concept, minus Oma Page of course, since none of those recordings had released as singles or were even known at the time.

Thanks again Rob. Stone Diamond some of the tracks could be:
What Good Am I Without You. Tr. 10.5.64.
    I Want You `Round. Rec. July 1964.
I Love You, Yes I Do. Rec. 18.4.64.
Baby I Need Your Loving. Rec. 18.9.64.
    Baby Say Yes. Rec. 28.10.64.
    Secret Love. Rec. 6.4.64.
Baby Don`t You Leave Me. Rec. 18.1.65.
    You`ve Got To Be Real.Tr. 25.5.64.
Love Fell On Me. Rec. 23.12.65. was probably out of the time frame. Regards Roger.

Ps. "Til There Was You" I can`t find a recording date for this track so it could have been intended.

On a slightly related note, I was wondering if any of the shows Marvin & Tammi did together had been recorded. It's a bit odd, in hindsight, that with all of the live albums that Motown was putting out at the time they didn't consider a 3rd LP being a live recording.

I haven`t heard of any and I would have thought that they would have seen the light of day by now. That`s not to say that I`m right. We always live in hope.

I would think that if there were any live recordings by the pair that they might have surfaced on the complete collection that came out a while back. It would be nice to think something does exist, although I don't think Marvin and Tammi toured together all that long. And judging by the comments by someone who attended the concert where Tammi fainted, it sounds as if Marvin did the majority of the show, and then called Tammi on to do a few songs.

I did see a Motortown Revue in 68 where Marvin and Tammi were billed but Brenda Holloway subbed for Tammi.

Hey 762rob - Do you remember what month that was exactly? I would imagine early in 1968 as it was the early part of 1968 that Brenda left the company. Do you remember who else was on that revue?

LOL. How does being a life long bachelor play into poor eyesight?

I apologize... The file was too big, so I downsized, and that's what came up. I tried to delete it but nope. Then I didn't come back to it.

The tracks chosen for the proposed album were as follows, but keep in mind there notations stating "this is not a sequence":

    1. WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU BABY
    2. SQUEEZE ME
    3. ONCE UPON A TIME
    4. YOU CAME A LONG WAY FROM ST. LOUIS
    5. I LOVE YOU [[FOR SENTIMENTAL REASONS)
    6. AFTER THE LIGHTS GO DOWN LOW
    7. BABY SAY YES [handwritten]
    8. WHAT GOOD AM I WITHOUT YOU
    9. I WANT YOU 'ROUND
    10. I LOVE YOU [[YES I DO)
    11. SECRET LOVE
    12. LET'S DO IT [[LET'S FALL IN LOVE)

    Album Title: 'Side by Side'
Artist listed as "Marvin, Mary, and Kim"
    Album No.: Tamla 260
