The drummer on "Tramp" was the late great Al Jackson, Jr, who was a founding member of Booker T & the MGs, the Stax studio rhythm section. In addition to playing at Stax, Jackson also did some drumming for another Memphis label, Hi Records. He played on Al Green's early records for that label, and was not only the drummer on "Let's Stay Together," but one of the co-writers of that monster hit as well.

NBS: Thanks for this information! Memphis and Muscle Shoals churned some of my favorite songs of all time back in the '60s. I especially love the fact that when I look at old photos of the musicians, the artists were black AND white. That's so cool because it just shows that people who love great music are the ones who play great music.

I'm kicking myself for not finding this forum years ago. There is a non-ending fount of information and I'm under the impression that many have stopped coming by to share it. That's my loss, I guess.

How could they forget Benny Benjamin's incredible drum intro for "Going To A Go Go?"

That's not a bad list, but there's a few "snare" intros I would have added:

What is Hip - Garabaldi's snare triplet straight into the hi hat starts the groove off right.
Manic Depression - Crosstown Traffic was a great call, but so is this unison intro. And don't get me started on how cool the groove is.
Early in the Morning - 4 Iconic flam taps between the snare and bass get this party started
White Rabbit - for me, Spencer Dryden's military ostinato always conjures up images of Vietnam on TV

But, why only snare drum intros? There have been plenty of iconic grooves that made a record come alive.

50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - Steve Gadd made his whole career right here. Talk about an intro you won't forget.
Up On the House Top - Yeah, from the Jackson 5 Christmas Album. When I first heard this intro, I went crazy. Don't remember this one? Check it out:

Walk This Way - The original Aerosmith version, not Run DMC!

Mary Mary - The Monkees. Hal Baline kickin' ass! Literally the song that made me want play drums.

Fopp - The Ohio Players' Diamond gettin' Funky and linear at the same time.

School Boy Crush - Funky jinglebells [[!!!!?!) and a nasty groove

777-9311 - The hi hat part that shook the world. Another signpost that changed a few things.

Sweetest Taboo - All one has to do is start this groove and people go insane.

And for killer drum intros, it's hard to beat these:

    Brickhouse - Go Walter, Go!

The Chicken - Dave Weckl channels Jaco.

Seek and You Will Find - Vinnie C doing what he does best. Killer fills

Mothership Connection - Dennis Chambers, nuff said

Nice topic, and ties in nicely with the occasional blog on drum fills that shows up on NPR's "All Songs Considered" blog on occasional Fridays.
