Totally arbitrary of course...If this was Rolling Stone or Billboard or CashBox, the lists would be different. If it was based on record/CD/download sales, Elvis Presley is still the "King."

PShark, the list I posted was supposedly what they were going to air the other night. In any case it is a travesty in my opinion. It would take me two hours to explain my feelings about this list and the rankings. I mean, they should have never used the term "Of All Time" when they did cover even some of the great artists from the 1950's such as Jackie Wilson. Even though that was not my era, I can appreciate the artistry of individuals such as Jackie.

Jackie Wilson was one of the best no doubt. But I
don't take these listings seriously. It's just one show's
    opinion.

I would have a hundred artists tied at #1 depending on my mood at the time I made the list.

VH1's list IS subjective, in the same way the Digital Dream Door lists are, and those are constantly revised. I would be [[almost) willing to bet that if you took any "Top 100" list, it would have basically the same artists, in generally the same locations [[1-25, 25-50, etc). Now given the long history of pop music, the number of artists whose records have graced turntables over the years, and the personal preference of individuals, I would think that a ranking in the "Top 100" in any general survey would be an honor unto itself.

PShark, the first list is based on the special that aired around 2000. On that list, P-Funk did indeed chart at number 99. I find it very interesting that they jumped half way up the list. Spin Magazine's list of the top 50 bands of all time is a more accurate assessment.

Did you also know that P-Funk is listed amongst the most influential musicians according to the Encyclopedia Brittanica? Right before the Beatles.

As I have stated before, that Digital Dream Door list, especially as it pertains to Funk, is total bull shit. They're just not as informed on Funk as they are with other musical genres.

That being said, as time goes on, many musical performers have seen their stock rise due to the influence that their music had on later generations, as well as how they're music has been sampled or co-opted by other artists. That definitely has to be put into consideration whenever these lists are compiled.
