    Nytro -- Whitfield Records

Anybody know much about this group that made 2 albums for Whitfield Records [[in 1977 + 79).

They had started out back in Columbus, Ohio as the Soul Superbs who recorded Just Ask Me / Cannibals for Mus-I-Col [[released as a 45 on the label around 1973).
Eventually most of the guys made it out to the west coast & they signed with Norman Whitfield.
Their 1st album included this decent slow track .....

They cut tracks with diverse sounds. Basically they came across as a funk group but cut disco-y stuff + ballads. So of their tracks had a E,W & F feel to them [[which can't be too bad) but they didn't enjoy too much success ........
"What It Is" made No.74 on the US Soul 45's chart in May 77 but that was it really.
By all accounts, they split up in 1980 but some of the guys played as session musicians on other Whitfield Records artists tracks.

Nytro was a perfect example of how talent and versatility can sometimes not be enough to build a career. As much as I enjoyed some of their music they never seemed to establish their own sound so much as reflect what other groups were
doing and, not trying to be mean, but better. Bobby Justice laid down some nice vocals on Dreaming but I know he wasnt' about to scare Phillip Bailey. I liked their funk but we know GC and the mob took it to another plane altogether.
Anyway, I'm curious as to why you posted the second link to the same song, was that an error? It's nice to see some
discussion of things not related to Supremes or Whitney Houston, otherwise...

I was a massive fan of everything Norman.....from the beginning - through the middle .... and then the quality dropped off.....what happened to the memorable melodies, the hooks, the dynamics. It seemed it was no longer part of the picture.... in short, the Whitfield label underdelivered and it was always a mystery and a disappointment to me.....I did buy every single Whitfield label album release but the results were patchy ...at least to these ears. He had very, very talented artists, [[ e.g. Junior, Willie, Undisputed, Stargard, Spyder) it just seemed to me that consistency in funk eluded Norman, even though he did some astounding funk productions. The Nytro album never really hit the spot for me from when I first bought it.

To give him his due, here's a great great Norman production on Undisputed..
