It is now on Yahoo as "breaking news" here:
    http://news.yahoo.com/legendary-blue...163740416.html

One of the best singers of R & B, blues, rock, period.
When I was at my parents house "At Last" came on the radio, and I asked my Dad "who is that?!!!!"; he said Etta James, that night I went looking for her records...

I just heard the news. I know she had been very ill for a long time, but this is still very sad. She was an innovator and pioneer of R&B and I loved her vocal style. I also loved her spirit and personality. She will be missed. Rest in peace Etta, God Bless and thank you for everything!

Indeed not unexpected, but sad. Etta recorded some beautiful music throughout many decades and changes of style. Yet she was always Etta. Thank you for the music.

    RIP , Mrs Etta James.

Etta is one of my very special ladies who I grew to love after hearing 'Tell Mama' in '67. She had an amazing life and survived against all odds. I saw her in Denver in '03, a surprise treat from my friends. If I had to pick a favourite album it would be 'Deep In The Night' but she had so many great albums. I bought her last album 'The Dreamer' just before Christmas and was really quite surprised at how good it is. Her biography 'Rage To Survive' is the best of its kind. Not only is Etta's life laid bare but it also gives an insight to the bad old days of how black people were treated. It's shocking but necessary reading. I'm so sad that Etta has gone but happy that she's now at peace.

Sad to see her go, but she's not in pain anymore. What a gift she had, the richness and depth of emotion is amazing.

How ironic that we lose both Johnny Otis and Etta within the same week. Etta could sing anything for me. May she rest in peace.

For one, she was the first woman in popular music to record a song that was consider "risque" from all sides when she recorded "The Wallflower" [[also known as "Roll With Me Henry" and "Dance With Me Henry") in response to the very popular song, "Work With Me Annie" by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. It all sounds relatively tame by today's standards but it was considered quite controversial for 1955.

I have about 2000 CDs in my collection, and of those, maybe 8-10 are by Etta. I just rotate them in my car randomly, so wouldn't you know that on this day when I heard of her passing, one of her CD's was in my player at the time. Much more than coincidence I would say.

Her version of Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody" is beyond awesome and I could listen to it all day. RIP special lady!

Oh, that's just during the rock & roll era. Trust me, women have recorded risque songs before then.

I know all a bout that gut bucket, black bottom stuff Ma Rainey and them were doing back in 1920's . I am talking Etta was during her thing at a time when people like Patti Page were singing

"[[How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window" and Doris Day with "Que Sera, Sera [[Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" . Etta had balls!

Etta's music has influenced several generations of artists, female artists in particularly. Here is Jully Black, "Canada's Queen of R&B" with a brilliant remake of Etta James' "Seven Day Fool"......check it out!

Yeah, that stuff is revolting! It's why the rock & roll era had to happen!

Though nobody was surprised at the news of her passing it is sad, regardless. I was at work when I got the word yesterday and I couldn't say how much I will miss Etta. No one did it like she did, no one could blend the blues, soul and
rock and roll in a big batter of sex and love the way she did on so many of her recordings. RIP, Jamesetta...
