I've spent most of this afternoon and evening listening to a song I heard for the first time today: Uptown by the Crystals. I've fallen absolutely in love with it and it's going to be an all time favourite song of mine. Somewhere in my top ten or twenty at the least.
It's such a beautiful song, and I'm very sad to have found out the lead singer for the single, Barbera Alston passed a few years ago.

Sadly, all the original members of The Marvelettes - with the exception of Wyanetta [known as Juanita] Cowart Motley - have all passed away. Later member Ann Bogan is thought to be still alive.....![]()

As much as I adore the Marvelettes and Wanda, I gave it a listen and I have to say the Crystals win this one for me. I think there's just too much going on with the music and Wanda oversinging, and there's no room for anything to breathe, so it ends up lacking the sublime and ethereal qualities that the Crystals version has. Rather than sitting on top of the Wall of Sound the way Barbara Alston does in the Crystals and Ronnie does in the Ronettes recordings, Wanda feels like she's determined to drown it out completely, so her voice, the backup singing and the backing track all feel like they are fighting each other for dominance instead of melding and harmonising. Still that was just my first impression so I may have to give it another listen and I may end up learning to appreciate it on its own merits. It is trying to do something different to the Crystals original, so I have to give it that at least.
Very sad about the Marvelettes pretty much all no longer being with us. One of the underrated Motown and 60s Girl Group greats.
