The Lonesome Road - Gene Austin [[1927)

Austin wrote the lyrics to the song and made the first recording of it in 1927. The music was written by Nathaniel Shilkret.

Austin, hardly remembered today, sold tens of millions of records in his day [[he estimated 80 million). His recording of "My Blue Heaven" in 1928 sold 5 million copies, making it the all-time best seller up to that point.

I have to admit, I had never listened to Austin's version of "The Lonesome Road" until now - I mostly think of the Frank Sinatra version, but I also have recordings of it by Louis Armstrong, The Delmore Brothers, Stevie Wonder [[on the "Down To Earth" album), and The Four Seasons.

Calvin, you have to remember that no one had a TV or a computer with Youtube in those
days, so the music business was thriving -- even the sale of sheet music. Thanks for the

It's Only a Paper Moon -- Written in 1932. The song's lasting fame stems from its revival by popular artists during the last years of World War II, with hit recordings being made by Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Benny Goodman [[vocal by Dottie Reid). It is now regarded as a jazz and pop standard, and has been recorded by numerous artists over the years.
