Whitney, Lionel, and Tina Turner and a host of others did just that. We're not talking about a case of recording lousy material. We're talking about record labels making a conscious effort to market what would later be called 'corporate black music'. Music that sounds like it was made in a corporate boardroom. Nelson George goes into great detail about this era black pop in the book "The Death Of Rhythm And Blues". And yes, Arista was one of the labels that lead the way in supporting this particular musical thrust.
