What is "Baxploitation"? Ploitating Baxes? A reference that's even more obscure and esoteric than "Oolated Squiggs"! I knew I couldn't possibly know all the English nouns, but I thought I knew all the verbs. Live and learn.

Ladyvanaye, "A Piece of The Action" was one of my favorites but we had to stick to only 5. Nowwwww.....if we were allowed to list our 10 favorites. My next 5 would go something like this:

    A Piece of The Action
    Scream Blackula Scream
    A Book of Numbers
    Sheba Baby

Why is it that any movie made during the 70's and 80's that had an all black casts was put in the blaxploitation category?
A lot of the movies you guys listed were just great movies, like Claudine and Cooley High.

    1...Trouble Man
2... Blackula [[so bad,you got to see it once)
    3....Norman..is that you?
    4....Shaft
5....The Mack [[if only for the Sisters Love scene..well background).

Hey to mysister..I agree with you.I think its quite a negative phrase, but THATS what it was called at the time and I think thats what the question asked. As Much as we might disagree with the title..Corporate America jumped on it after the sucess of SHAFT & LADY SINGS THE BLUES et al, and all of a sudden these often CRAP movies, financed by Hollywood exploded on the scene.

It was like the Disco boom. All this wonderful BLACK dance music we had been dancing to for years, was suddenly, formulated, diluted and pressup for mass consumption by the Corporate record companies to appeal to main stream
AMERICA make a quick$$$$$. I mean, would you rather dance to War, Thelma Houston, Brick, Chic or Ethel Mermen, Disco Duck, Village People and the 1000s of other CRAP things that appeared then. whatever! Thats my rant done. SMILE..PAULO XXXXX

The best thing about that movie is the great music. One of the best soundtracks ever. The fact that it was a very good movie, too, is a bonus.

@Marve2, I met Pam Grier last year at a Dianne Reeves concert. Pam and Dianne are best friends. I must say that Pam was very gracious and nice, and still pretty as she is in that poster you uploaded.

I never really thought of Coolie High as a "blaxploitation" film, just a great coming of age film which happened to feature
a black cast of characters. I thought it was as funny as it was deep in it's exploration of a lot of themes and issues
quite common in a lot of folks lives. I also have to second ladyv on Nothing But A Man which co-starred our recently
    lost Abbey Lincoln.
Now Ms Pamela Grier, and I highly recommend her memoir released this year, was the business!...

Mmm...An acronym? That's a new one for me. Anyway, as I recall, wasn't Tamara Dobson a former runway model? She definitely had that "swagga" goin' on...

I can't think of 5 that are my favorites, but I can think of 4:

    Claudine
    The Mack
    Piece of the Action
    Uptown Saturday Night

Honorable mention goes to Black Caesar - Much of the action and the plot was laughable, but James Brown and that soundtrack get an "A" from me.

How are "Cooley High" and "Sounder" "exploitation films". Who or what was being exploited? They were both very good films that were very good enough to make on their stories, directing, acting and music. They should have been made, and were made. I don't think they qualify for exploitation films, made to exploit a trend of popularity.
