I taped this documentary when it first aired. I still have the VHS recording somewhere in my collection.

I really don't know, but it should be as it is excellent! You might start by checking/searching PBS's website.

I wished I knew when it had aired. Timmy, do you remember?

I'd have to look at the VHS. I know that I put the exact date on the tape. You'll have to give me a few days.

I also recorded it,when it originally aired. I don't think it was ever released on DVD. With the buzz of the old Brunswick Studio, and the Blues Heaven Foundation [[Chess Records) possibly coming back into becoming a functioning recording studio/tourist attraction, they should release it again to the public.

They should have had a 20 hour documentary series, so they could go into more detail. This was like newspaper headlines when you want to read the whole story. But, it was well done, nevertheless.

They didn't even get into Art Sheridan's Chance Records or his distributorship, and very little about late '40s and early '50s Blues, Gospel and R&B music. They didn't get much into Bunky Sheppard and Ewart Abner's Constellation Records, what Mercury Records and Okeh Records, and One-Der-Ful/Marvelous/MPac Records did. They didn't really show much of what Billy Davis did at Chess, or Carl Davis at Okeh and Brunswick.

Dang, how the hell did I miss this? Oh my, I just remembered I haven't watched much tv in the last 20 years! Dang!
I hope I can find it on dvd. That old footage is off the chain. I'll have to book time later today to watch the other parts.
    Thanks for posting this, marv!...

Record Row was originally broadcast on February 20th, 1997 on PBS during it's African American Heritage Month series. It was narrated by Etta James.
    I hope this helps.

How convenient that would be brother_love. LOL!

Sometimes my DVD recorder can be very picky in terms of burning. If I'm able to make a successful copy, I'll send it to marv2 and let him distribute it.

I contacted WTTW about the documentary and got this reply:

    Dear June,

We no longer have the rights to air Record Row and do not have information on where to purchase a DVD.

    Thank you,

I don't like sitting at a computer to watch stuff but Record Row was interesting enough for me to sit there and watch. I wish someone would do a documentary on Billy Stewart.
