"Nightflight" Tue Aug 9, 9P-12M ET: The Genius of Jimmy Webb

Howdy, there! I think it's important, at least once a year, to devote a complete show the the amazing singer, composer, arranger and producer Jimmy Webb. We all know that Jimmy's first job was with Motown....so tonight you'll hear a number of his Motown songs,
as well as some of his classics and unique compositions. So...join me tonight...for 3 hours with Jimmy Webb...and friends...on "Nightflight"...on WOMR 92.1 FM Provincetown and WFMR 91.3 FM Orleans and streaming live worldwide in digital stereo at www.womr.org

    Thanks!

With so many fantastic songs to his credit this show will no doubt include many favorites for us all. If you play his first Motown song be sure and play the superior [[if more sad) mono version. Looking forward to the show mi amigo. See you on the radio.

I made it Johnny & gang! hopefully I haven't missed too much from the 5th Dimension, Ronstadt, Campbell, Rivers, or the other tunesmiths who delved into Webb's amazing material....

Did anyone else think the arrangement of Johnny River's "Carpet Man" sounded very similar to Neil Diamond's
    "You Got To Me"?

Ah, The Magic Garden! My favorite album of all-time! It is a masterpiece that doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The fact that it was written and arranged by a 21-year old Jimmy Webb blows my mind.

Here is that clip I mentioned. The Contessas on Shiviree, with the INFAMOUS Susan Horton/Ronstadt...Jimmy's lover and focus of so many of his songs. She is in the background...NOT smiling because of her braces.

The Magic Garden was one of those albums that never charted high on the Billboard 200 [[petered out around 105-110) but ended up spending 30 weeks on the chart..... it's also one of the best 25 cent albums I ever picked up as a kid from Goodwill.. the store I also got my love for the Supremes and classic Motown from.....

When The Supremes' Christmas album was released I was 4 months shy of my 15th birthday and just fell in love with "My Christmas Tree" - especially the slower, sadder, basically solo, mono version. Oh, the agony. The exquisite agony. A morose song for a morose teenager! LOL!!!! I can laugh now. Ha.
It's still a great song. Thanks Johnny!

I am back in town today after 9 days away and could only listen to the show tonight and not participate. I promise to be online next week and of course during the Philly Music. I am sure we will talk on the phone before the show, right?
