Here are some of my favorite songs which are rarely heard these days.

First, the last single by The Fuzz, which precious few people seem to have heard...

And a few early cuts led by a young Billy Brown with The Broadways...

And a tragically Deep Soul ballad from Josephine Taylor out of Chi-Town, with one hell of an arrangement which truly deserved more spins...

This one by Willie & The Mighty Magnificents holds some very fond memories for me, as it came out shortly after I moved to my present home back in Oct. of 1969. This one is SWEET!!!

Donnie Elbert proved that heartbreak never sounded so sweet...

Some sweet soul from The 11th Commandment on Chess circa 1974...

Some serious soul from Smoke...

Ty Karim - Lighten Up Baby [[the remake which I prefer head & shoulders above the original)

Ty Karim as Towana & Total Destruction - Wear Your Natural Baby - Man, I LOVE this song!

Donnie Elbert did a fantastic job writing and performing the tune. Ty Karim is a wonderful.
Whew, you put Josephine Taylor on here, very nice song and much underrated indeed.

Thank you very much for your kind words. I USED to think that I knew about a lot of music, but through the members of SDF & books like "Chicago Soul", I discovered that there was so much music that I never knew existed. Artists like Ty Karim & Josephine Taylor I never knew existed until the days of Napster. Yet another argument against the argument for sharing oldies, because those discoveries made me go out & buy Ty Karim & the Twilight Records CDs, amongst many others.

Great pick with Toussaint McCall. I have fond childhood memories from when that song was played in my home

Like you, I always loved hearing music that I'd never heard. That's what finally dragged me kicking & screaming into the age of CDs & Napster. I used to flip the 45 to see if it was good & ran through every cut on the LP. When I was a DJ, I didn't just play whatever they were pushing on radio, but rather, anything that I thought was good.

I knew of Debbie Taylor from her music on Today, but certainly not all of it & The Apollas I knew of from the "This Is Loma" LP set, which I won in auction around 1988.

Thanks for contributing & I look forward to seeing what else you'll come up with.

Seriously, as a fellow lover of The Fuzz, I knew that you'd love hearing it & I'd never heard until earlier this year. I know that people hate the idea of bootlegging, but I see some of these sets & the names listed & so much of that music is great, but if not for the bootleggers, most of us would never even know that it exists.

I admit that for many of these selections, my taste is likely going to lean more toward ballads & likely sweet soul ballads, at that. HOWEVER...there'll likely be some Disco & uptempo Soul, as well. I just find the ballads of that period to be so much more compelling & equally as obscure for many of us. I'm just glad that youtube seems to have stopped the practice of taking down almost everything.

Or could it be that some producers have realized that this is helping to promote them & keep their legacies going? Either way it's a great thing to hear so many of these songs that I'd either never heard of, or only read about in books such as Chicago Soul".

One that I discovered about 10 years ago. This is one sweet song & should've done some nice numbers upon its release.

Here's one by some fellas who spelled their name just a wee bit different, but the music is still just as sweet. From 1977...

This baby did chart, but if you ask me, simply doesn't receive the mention & play that it deserves...

One SWEET ballad, right 'chere...

This one is too. Check out the production by Eddie K...

How about The Main Ingredient from the days when they were known as The Insiders...

Or Bloodstone when they were known as The Sinceres...

I want to close this out with some energy. And now for some Disco/Dance music...

Not really obscure, but deserves more attention that it gets. And listen to the opening vocal riff, then listen to the movie version of "A House Is A Heart For Love" & tell me that you don't hear a similarity...

Now THIS...is one of the BADDEST Disco jams EVER!!! Back in 1977 & 78, this one was HOT as Hades in the club that I played at. This bassline just can't be denied, check out these breaks & the percussion work & check out those keys during the breakdown about 2 or 3 minutes before the fade...hypnotic as hell! The vocals, shakers...man, EVERYTHING about this song is great. It can ONLY be appreciated by listening to the ENTIRE 10+ minutes of this 12'', which is provided for you here...

Back in 77/78 when this jam came out, there just wasn't anything else quite like it. This some just builds & builds until it gets to the break. The break was totally ridiculous with some of the craziest percussion & all of that moaning...this song was THE BOMB. A bit long for most [[most of you will likely have to skip directly to the breaks & what a break it is!), very high energy, but this song used to get a crazy response at the club that I spun at in Brooklyn.

I don't care how many jazzed-up remakes they came out with, don't care about how many DJ-friendly remixes they came out with. From the day that I bought this LP back in '78, this version was & remains my definitive version of this Adams/Carmichael classic:

Back in 1978, I thought that this was one great song. There was something kinda hypnotic about it that reached out & grabbed me. Still loving it...

Oh, heck ya.... look what I found:

And you all know this is one of my all time favorites, so glad they actually shot a promo film for it. I first heard it on a little oldies station in Eldorado Springs, MO about 20 years ago and just fell in love. it's so dark and brooding, then that kettle drum exploding into the final chorus just knocks me out!
