Hello fellow forum members,
In the very interesting link in the "Tape Machines & The Motown Sound" is another link to YouTube with a segment from Standing In The Shadows Of Motown. I always love it when Jack Ashford explains and the build up to "Ain't To Proud To Beg" is shown.
Now the YouTube algorithm then gave me below clip of a performance of Sam Moore with 5 Funk Brothers:
And I thought I would share it with you.
I also would like to share a memorie. When the documentary came out, the Funk Brothers also did a kind of world tour. I lived in the Netherlands then and they came to Amsterdam to perform in the best venue. In Amsterdam there is a church converted to a concert podium, fantastic atmosphere. I also saw Smokey Robinson there, amazing, but...back to the Funk Brothers.
For the different performances they brought guest singers. In Amsterdam Isaac Hayes and I believe Gilbert O'Sullivan. Isaac Hayes cancelled due to health issues and was replaced by C.G Cameron. How Motown can you get it...
They had a segment where they invited women up on stage to sing "My Girl". Well....sorry, but as a big fan I also jumped up on stage [[I am male). So I could say that I sang with the Funk Brothers. Song was over, girls left the stage, but I took my chance...I stayed on stage and shook all the hands of the Funk Brothers, hugged the backing vocals and then left.
The concert was a rousing success and this was the only time they came back for an encore. After the encore I had a brief chat with Eddie Willis. I asked for signatures, but they could not do that at the time, he asked my address and to my surprise, weeks later a picture arrived, with all the signatures. So sweet.
If I can find an image of it I will share it. Did any of you attend the Funk Brothers concerts? A year later Jack Ashford came back with papa Joe Hunter, it was papa Joe's last concert, he passed away a few weeks later.
