It sounds like a great evening. If I was in NYC, I would definitely go.

Back in 1998, for my birthday, some friends and I went to see Dionne's "pre-Broadway tryout" of her show DIONNE SINGS DIONNE. We arrived for the matinee, only to find that it had been cancelled. The theater offered us seats to the evening performance, so we decided to stay. The theater manager even let us poke around, and we went on stage and looked through her notes. I can't believe we did that!

For the show, Dionne had her sister Dee Dee and Myrna Smith Schilling singing background and I remember them doing a great version of CHILDREN, GO WHERE I SEND THEE. The show itself was pretty good, although it needed a lot of work [IMO] to make it to Broadway. That said, it was a nice experience. And when Dionne found out that it was my birthday present, she even autographed a photo for me!

wow, Reese, that's great. I met Dionne in 1967 she was appearing at a closed concert at Orlando Auditorium for a local college. I snuck in backstage, knocked on her dressing room door, told her how much I loved her , that she & Mary Wells were my faves & she invited me in & I was her valet for the night!!She was so cool.I would go & get her snacks & coca cola. Some big wig from the college asked who I was & Ms. Warwick told them I was with her.Cool memory.

This is a great story, Tony. I'm still waiting for your book.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet Dionne. The theater manager was nice enough to tell Dionne that it was my birthday, and my friends and I had driven up for the cancelled matinee. So she signed a photo for me. But she did write "Happiness on your day."

In addition to seeing her in concert a dozen or so times over the years, I did once "manipulate" a chance to meet her in person, but I was so nervous that it was over in a heartbeat and I don't think I even established eye contact with her.

This would have been in the spring of either 1982 or 1983 and the event was her nephew's graduation from our local military school here in Virginia. I believe her sons attended that same school but I am not certain of that.

Anyway, I had gotten a tip that she would be here for the graduation which was held on a Saturday morning at a church. So I positioned myself outside and waited for people to come outside. I recognized her immediately in a bright red cocktail-length dress.

She walked over to a corner of the church's huge front porch and lit up a cigarette. At that time, I would not have known about her smoking habit, so that disappointed me a bit. Nevertheless I dashed over to her with an armful of my album jackets and said something to the effect of "Miss Warwick, could I trouble you for an autograph?" This would of course been before I had ever seen her in concert and at the time probably assumed that I never would.

So she took the pen from my hand and scribbled her usual "happiness" autograph on the album on top, which was the 1972 Dionne album. Of course I still have that today. She was then the one that thanked me, not vice versa, and due to my nervousness I might not have said another word to her other than the initial question.

I doubt if the whole encounter lasted more than 15 seconds. I realized that I was intruding on a private family event and that she might very well have been rude to me and refused me, but it went as well as could be expected.

I never thought along these lines but I wondered if maybe Cissy was there at the same event and perhaps even Whitney. After all the graduate could have been a member of their family.

Dion's voice is basically gone. She talks sing mostly.

I do not understand your comment on this. Are we talking about Dion of Dion & the Belmonts or Dionne Warwick [solo]. Are you stating she does talking releases as well as singing releases.

    Your comments are stupid.

I believe there are plenty of reviews and comments around, like it or not, to the effect that Dionne Warwick’s voice has suffered from the effects of aging, like many other artists that are getting old.

It can sting a bit to hear it about an artist we love to hear.

My auto correct corrects Dionne to Dion - looks like a common correction it’s making

In a perfect world I'd LOVE to be at the Apollo to stand and cheer the lady. She's earned it. I hope the event is a big sellout!
