Marvin & Tammi are certified in the US [[RIAA update)!

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell are now cemented together in the RIAA.

Four days ago, the duo's debut 1967 album, United was certified GOLD by the RIAA [[Recording Industry Association of America) for sales of 500,000 copies. I don't know how much it sold in the 1960s music industry but the fact that it was certified is no shock, considering it includes their signature hit, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", which also was certified.

On the same day United was certified, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was also certified 7x platinum by the RIAA for sales of 7 million units, making it one of the highest-certified singles of the 1960s and currently the highest-certified single in MOTOWN HISTORY! And of Marvin and Tammi's careers.

Oddly enough TODAY marks what would've been Tammi's 80th birthday. How about that for a posthumous birthday present?

These are Tammi's first RIAA certifications ever and Marvin's first since 2003's Live at Montreux DVD was certified platinum in 2008 [[17 years ago).

It's too bad that neither of them are here to receive this award. I'm wondering if their families have been contacted for these certifications? Will they receive the RIAA Gold Record - if they do such a thing today?

It's a Happy Coincedence that Marvin & Tammi's classic United album received a Gold Record Certification from the RIAA on Tammi Terrell's Birthday [and that "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" has been certified 7 times Platinum]. Thanks midnightman for the news.

I believe so. They have to. I know at least Marvin's family has been contacted. Either Zeola or one of the children received it. Whoever's in charge of the Gaye estate. Tammi's sister might still be living to get Tammi's.
