Mono and Stereo on CD

Including the expanded editions and unofficial CDs from Ben, out of copyright Hallmark CDs etc, which Motown albums are available in both mono and stereo on CD please?

For example:

Marvin's "When I'm Alone I Cry" contained both the mono and stereo tracks [[31453-0356-2).

Martha and The Vandellas "Come And Get These Memories" is in mono [[31453-0366-2) and beautiful stereo on the 2fer with Heat Wave [[440-016-835-2).

16 Big Hits Volume 1 to 3 and part of 4 are available as stereo CDs [[MOTDs) and as mono tracks on the 5 Motown Classic Hits CDs [[31453-0403-2 / 31453-0419-2 / 31453-0420-2 / 31453-0421-2 / 31453-0422-2)

What else are we aware of please?

There is the Isley Bros "Motown Anthology" which has the mono versions of "This Old Heart of Mine" and "Soul On The Rocks" and the Marvelettes "The Marvelettes" and "Sophisticated Soul" are on "Forever More" in mono to compliment the 2 on 1 cd. Ace did a 2 on 1 with Mary Wells "The One Who Really Loves You" and "Two Lovers in mono.

Marvin Gaye Hello Broadway was first issued in stereo. Japan issued it in mono on their SBM Mini-LP series.

You know, I'm not totally convinced the "Come And Get These Memories" stand-alone CD is
taken from the original 1963 mono LP tapes. There's something strange-sounding about it, that I simply cannot put my finger on, so to speak. And I'm fully prepared to believe the version used on the CD is actually a fold-down, of the stereo version used later, for want of a better explanation. Comments would be most welcome.

All of the Supremes studio albums up to Sing HDH have been issued on CD in both stereo and mono with the exception of specialty albums like A Bit of Liverpool, We Remember Sam Cooke, and Sing Country Western & Pop. I believe all of the CD reissues of those albums used the original stereo mixes. Oddly, the mono mix of Sing Rodgers & Hart has never been issued on CD. The 1987 reissue were new mixes done by Deke Richards and the Complete Recordings was just the stereo mix with the bonus tracks. Also, I don't believe the mono mix for There's A Place For Us has been released. The stereo mix was used for CD release.

The stereo album of Country, Western And Pop was available as a download from itunes.

The Marvelettes Playboy was original issued in stereo and was released in mono in Japan in 2013.

Marvin Gaye's When I'm Alone I Cry was also issued on CD in Japan in Stereo only.

The Supremes' A Bit Of Liverpool was released in stereo as well as mono. Here's a picture of the label from Discogs.com. PS: I've never listened to this album so I can't say if it's true stereo or not.

It is true stereo, but a little odd - see below. There is clear channel separation [meaning true stereo] versus reverb added to mono tracks [fake stereo]. What's interesting is that the girls are isolated into the right channel and band onto the left. I wonder if these tracks weren't recorded in conventional stereo and this is how they achieved the "stereo" designation without it being considered fake.

The various official CDs follow the same format which isn't unpleasant. "House Of The Rising Sun" and "Because" [[which is my favourite track on the album) have the girls in the left channel. They're right channel otherwise.

Some tracks seem so hard to find in stereo. Marvin Gaye's "That Stubborn Kinda' Fellow" album is probably a case in point - I'm not sure whether a stereo version was issued on vinyl. Supposedly a stereo version was issued on cassette [[M5-218-LC) in the 80s I think. All CD versions, however, seem to be mono in varying quality.

I was quite hopeful of a Japanese CD in stereo [[POCT-1882 in 1993) as shown on Discogs but whilst the sound does seem a little fatter than usual, it's basically little different to the other mono CDs. Other than the stereo description I though it might be the same as the EU Polygram and later Music On CD releases and it's fairly close to those. POCT-1882 actually shows it's a "STEREO TRANSCRIPTION" - whatever that might mean.

So whilst I have the tracks "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", "Pride & Joy", "Hitch Hike" and "Wherever I Lay My Hat" in beautiful stereo on other releases, does anyone know where these tracks can be obtained in true stereo please?

Back in the day, my LP copy of A Bit of Liverpool had a Stereo sticker on the front jacket. It was not pre-printed on the cover.

- I think 530222-2 and MOCCD13873 will be identical and another good source is the 2fer with "How Sweet It Is" 440-013-184-2. But all pail in comparison with the true stereo tracks on the "Super Hits" compilation [[mine is UICY94035) and possibly other hits collections I've yet to compare. "Wherever I Lay My Hat" is in nice stereo on Marvin's CD "The Norman Whitfield Sessions" 530355-2. So I'd be very happy to find similar quality versions of the 6 tracks mentioned above. But I fear I may be onto a loser there.

Goodness, I found a little inspiration straight away on my Japanese CD Marvin Gaye "Greatest Hits" [[UICY94034), Volume 1 of which contains 7 tracks from the Stubborn album and in glorious stereo.

So that only leaves 2 still needed -
"Get My Hands On Some Lovin' " and
"Soldier's Plea"

Wonders never cease.
