    Non-album tracks

Is there any easy way of finding released tracks and b-sides which do not appear on studio albums?
There are some fairly obvious ones I'm aware of e.g. Beauty Is Only Skin Deep - The Temptations, but wasn't aware of e.g. Promise Me - Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.
Is it just a case of trawling through all single releases and comparing with released albums?
[[Only interested in say approx. 1964 - 75.)

Thanks. I included it as the single was released in '75. I like 'Ross' but I personally never classed it as a proper studio album as 5 of the tracks were old. I think that Motown were desperate to release something and this is what we got. Strange as there were at least 7 new tracks that could have been included but instead they were canned at the time. Never made any sense to me.

I hear ya, Copley. I love that album, too, and yes, Motown was indeed playing "catch-up" with a few of the previously-released singles, yet it had enough new tracks that I loved [[i.e., "Never Say I Don't Love You"; "You Were The One"; "To Love Again", "Where Did We Go Wrong", "What You Gave Me", previously-released 45 B-side "Together"; and can't forget the brilliantly-remixed version of "Reach Out I'll Be There" in which the strings are brought out to the front where they sizzle hotter than ever before! Ashford & Simpson were on fire with that one! [[Just needed to add my two-cents' worth because I love that album. To me, it's one of Diana's best!)

Thanks all, on a quick scan there are a lot I recognise and will have on various compilation CD's but many I don't so will do some searching and see what I can find on compilation CD's I don't have. Already have spreadsheet of my CD and LP tracks so I can compare.

I was surprised to discover some years ago when I bought Four Tops "Lost Without You" CD the fantastic track "Your Love Is Wonderful", which I hadn't heard before, yet it is the b-side of the classic "If I Were A Carpenter" - UK / "Walk Away Renee" - US.

The Four Tops "Your Love Is Wonderful" was surely wasted as a mere 45 B-side release when it has all the makings of a bonafide, sure-fire, A-side Hit Record! Chalk another one up for the many mysteries of Motown!

NOTE: Released in 1971, the two singles and B-side titles listed above remained homeless as far as a parent album was concerned. It wasn't until 2004 when David Ruffin's previously-unreleased album -- "David" -- was at-long-last released for the first time [[not on vinyl, but on CD). All 4 of the 45 titles listed in my above post were included.

I so agree with your view of YLIW! It should have been included on the Yesterday Dreams album instead of the awful [[IMO) MOR covers. Lonely Lover would have been another strong contender for inclusion too IMO.

And I agree with you, Eamonn. Motown sometimes went overboard with non-Motown covers -- especially those boring MOR tunes. A classic example is Four Tops "On Top". Side 1 was perfect. Side 2 was severely tainted with easy listening schlock that stuck out like an annoying sore thumb [[with the exception of "Then", which was a great song, albeit wasted at the tail-end of Side 2).

Well done for all of the Motown 45's that you have worked through.

I thought about the other Motown records that belonged to Berry Gordy back from the 1965/1966. There are lots more Detroit Records that Berry ended up with from the 6T's.

If You want any more just let me know. [Billy Davis, L. Dozier, B.Gordy] & Others.

They are all Motown 45's that Berry took them over, and many more from the 6T's.
It's just a question in that these other tracks could be none Motown Album's.

What's wrong with it when they are belonging Motown records as well?

It's just a question in that these other tracks could be none Motown Album's.

What's wrong with it when they are belonging Motown records as well?
I must have missunderstood the topic - I thought they were talking about Motown singles that never made LP's of course I can now see you have opened up the topic further by discussing non Motown 45's. Of course The Spinners pictured here did appear on an LP - the other two I can see your point now - my bad for missunderstanding the topic of the thread.

I have many 45's if your interested, this one is a Tamla & the Demo Columbia. Likely the Columbia record was first and was then passed across to Tamla for Herman Griffin "Oct 1960" at MOTOWN & Berry Gordy.
[The B Sides are exactly the same "It's You"]
