My how Otis' voice has changed! [LOL]
My how Otis' voice has changed! [LOL]
Haha could see that coming! Ironically the one lead Otis gets on Cloud 9 [[actually one word, ‘Reality’) doesn’t show him in close-up. To be fair it’s deliberately filmed so Otis is not in close-up when he’s mouthing Eddie’s lines. As an aside Otis had to fill in for Eddie in around 1970 when they came to the UK [[Eddie arrived late) and they did Can’t get next to you on Top of the Pops. Otis sang Eddie’s part but in his own voice. The clip is in YouTube somewhere
Surprised they didn't use Richard Street as a sub
I remember seeing this live when it happened. It was obvious Eddie was missing. Was his absence ever explained?
From The Temptations Legacy posting of the clip:
Temptations fans, we're gonna celebrate a moment in music history! Exactly 56 years ago from today, The Temptations won their first Grammy award for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group" for their hit song "Cloud Nine," which made them the first Motown act to do so in 1969. It's amazing how out of many Motown greats like Diana Ross & The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder didn't win any before, but The Temptations made history and broke the barrier.
The Tempts went on to perform their hit song during the 11th Annual Grammy Awards, as you see in this very rare footage that I'm happy to show to you. Unfortunately, only four members were performing. Eddie Kendricks couldn't attend this special occasion due to feeling under the weather at the time.
Well, how Milli Vanilli of Otis!
I've never understood how this was Motown's first Grammy. Honestly, I don't even think it's Grammy worthy. Previous nominations like "My Guy," "Stop! In The Name of Love," "Baby Love" and "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" were all more deserving - I don't get how those were overlooked.
Cloud Nine deserved the Grammy because the song had a outstanding musical track[[ two live drummers with the high hat, which was three years before "Shaft". And the five Temptations taking Sly Stone's "Dance to the music" to new heights. One of the best songs ever! Was a game changer.
A vey well deserved Grammy I think.
Melvin's bass vocal was always a winner for me - lifted so many tracks - plus some great facial expressions when performing songs [[even miming) - always seemed to be a fun and cheeky glint in his eyes.
I've always felt that Dennis Edwards was easily a worthy successor to David Ruffin, as great as he was. Plus I love the earthy vocals of Paul Williams. Great to watch these old performances.
