Who was the main star of the early motor town revue?

Im currently listening to the motor town revue volume 2 lp rn and im noticing the crowd reactions to the performers. Is it safe to assume Mary Wells was a bigger star than the miracles, marvin, and stevie in those early days of motown. If so why do documentaries I always watch make those people seem so much more popular than her?

Mary Wells & the Miracles were the biggest stars.

In the early days of Motown, Mary Wells was referred to as The First Lady of Motown. [Sorry Roberta ] She was very popular

It would appear that Mary Wells and The Marvelettes got the most audience response so I'd have to say they were the bigger stars. The Supremes were tolerated.

Mary Wells, Miracles, Marvelettes and Little Stevie were the top acts at that time. The Supremes traveled with them, but were billed "and others". But not forever. During one of the tours that they were being billed "and others" they started getting recognition. Their first hit song WDOLG was being played on radio and soon went to number one ..

Mary told that story in almost every interview that she gave

Not a Motortown Revue, that was a Dick Clark Caravan of Stars tour that the Supremes were on because of Brenda Holloway,WDOLG started moving up the charts during that tour[[summer of '64).

I would say The Marvelettes and Mary Wells were the most popular of the early Motortown Revue performers.

Mary Wells was definitely the big star of the early Motown Revues. She was one of the only acts who didn't have to ride the bus [[most of the time) and had her own chauffeured car. According to Mary Wilson, Mary Wells was intended to be the headline of the first British tour, before her departure.

After Mary, the big stars were probably the Marvelettes and the Miracles. It's also talked about how at one of the first Motown Christmas parties, the size of the gifts the acts were given showed their status in the pecking order: while the then "no hit Supremes" got tiny portable radios and tape recorders as their presents, the Marvelettes got diamond rings.

This is the first time I have ever heard that Mary Wells had her own chauffeured car. Curtis Woodson in his fabulous book has a story that Marv Johnson had his own chauffeured car and always was on his own. Could you be confused with the artist?

In DREAMGIRL, Mary Wilson mentioned both Mary and Marv as having their own drivers.

Mary Wells rode the bus on that first big Motortown Revue tour of 1962, she said she was so glad when she could afford her own car & didn't have to ride the bus.
