Hit & Run More Motown Guys how to preorder if you reside in the USA.

I communicated with the director of sales for ACE/KENT regarding the upcoming Hit and Run More Motown Guys as to where in the USA would be a good source to order it from. He recommended to me www.dustrygroove.com and I just placed a pre-order for it. It was $13.99.

What intrigued me the most about it was his quote: "They are very efficient and they have stock in advance of the release date."

I went into their website and it is listed there and I was able to pre-order it.

This should certainly help residents of the USA. Go for it.

This release will be officially dedicated to Keith Hughes.

Dusty Groove has long been my alternate source for Ace, Kent, etc. releases when I can't wait the extra month for things to be released on Amazon. The releases are usually cheaper than Amazon there by about US $3.00 or so but that savings [for me] basically gets gobbled up by the shipping charges I have to pay. [I have Amazon Prime, so I get free shipping buying from there.] Still, from Dusty Groove I'm getting it sooner AND it's a small[er] business based in Chicago, Illinois.

Woodward and I were pretty impressed that Dusty Groove's shipping was only $3. Almost everything I've ever ordered from the UK generally has pretty salty shipping costs. There are regularly items I'm interested in on the US Ebay site located in the UK, but I rarely bid on them as shipping for a single photo or booklet is generally $15 to $20 US and I just can't justify that in most cases.

I have used Dusty Groove on occasion and been pleased with it. However I guess I was unaware of the concept of them having things earlier than anyone else.

My preferred music site used to be Deep Discount, because they would occasionally offer 15% off coupons and you only had to buy $25.00 worth to get free shipping. But those specials applied only to "in stock" items and lately I have found their "in stock" inventory to be sadly lacking. Lots of things say Backorder or Special Order or in some cases, they are simply not on the site at all.

I have also discovered over the years that Deep Discount is somehow connected to WowHD and Import CD, because their inventories are always exactly the same. So the options for buying music online [[especially CDs) are getting lower all the time.

This is by no means a knock of DG, but they do seem to sell out of their initial stock of new Ace/Kent stuff pretty quickly. They do get restocked in time, but I suspect "the secret is out there" when it comes to them, their prices, and people pre-ordering. Who knows? Maybe if they get more and more business on the releases like this then they'll order larger initial runs? I wanted to say "on all the future Ace/Kent releases," but we know they won't be doing much more Motown CDs with Keith having passed. If you're a fan of their other releases [[which I am), then there's reason to be happy about DG as an alternative source in the USA.

I thought that everyone would be interested in knowing this, I placed my order with DG on 2/17 and I received it on Saturday, 3/15/25.

Has anyone else received it? How was I so lucky?

  7. #7
I just got notified within the last half-hour that H&R was in stock at DG, so I ordered it a few minutes ago. Since it was earlier than expected, I chose Media Mail as my option [[half as much as Priority Mail). There was also nothing in their store I wanted today to make the PM cost worthwhile [[I think up to 4-5 CDs is still light enough to get covered under the same cost for PM).

Woodward, I think you got lucky! Let’s hope I don’t suffer with the delivery estimate of 1-6 weeks for Media Mail! I could deal with waiting a week, but not sure about waiting up to 6 weeks!

  8. #8
When I went to order it I got a SOLD OUT

I will wait until it is available on Amazon.

My copy is supposed to arrive by Saturday. I guess I got one of the last copies at Dusty Groove.
Did you text/e-mail/call them to see when they might receive more copies?

  10. #10
Anybody received the CD in the UK?

I hope yours comes on Saturday, Lucky! Mine is "predicting" [LOL] delivery on Monday, but I'm hoping the USPS will move a little faster and I'll get mine on Saturday, too. That'll allow me to rip it, read the booklet, and take a good, long listen to the disc on the weekend.

I've noticed with the last few months of Ace/Kent releases, that Dusty Groove seems to get in an initial supply of releases... they sell out... and then it takes a few more weeks before they get an additional supply. The good thing in this is that they SELL OUT. Amazon is definitely a good alternative when it comes to price and speed of delivery once it ships, but if you want a release earlier than Amazon gets it and at a good price, DG is where you should shop.

One little thing I did notice, I could've sworn the DG pre-release notice listed this disc as being $13.99--which has been the usual price for their Ace/Kent new releases. When I bought mine the other day, it was $14.99. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the whole tariff craziness happening between the US and other countries including the UK. Maybe not, but... I wondered why suddenly it went up a dollar. [A WHOLE DOLLAR! LOL]

    Trump tax probably

My copy from DG arrived today. I just listened to it for the first time and I'm very happy I grabbed this title.

I originated this thread and mine cost $13.99 and was shipped for $3.00 via USPS Ground Advantage vs. Media Mail.

The $1.00 increase is NO SURPRISE. Like everything else these tariffs [aka taxes] seem to change constantly and seem to be implemented sporadically. It could change from one day to the other. If it amounts to only $1.00 --- consider yourself lucky.

Mine just arrived today, a day earlier than expected. I'm one happy camper.

    Hmmh...
Never say never with Motown- Never Never Land. I wonder if anyone else recorded 'The Rose Of My Life'?

I'm surprised that the notes state that no one else recorded 'To See the Sun Again' . I've always loved Chuck Jackson's version on "Chuck Jackson Arrives".

Am I reading this correctly...the CD has landed in the USA but not here in the UK?

Perhaps the U.S.A. is getting priority over the U.K. Hope not -- the U.K. looks like being treated as a poor relation. And with Universal involved, this sort of crap does not surprise me. But Ace Records needs to come up with a credible reason, since they are based in the U.K. and it's their release.

Exactly.....The UK fans have kept "Rare" Motown alive for years.....this is very poor

Just a quick question. In the notes, the first selection, "Without You Babe" is called 'Four Tops-style'. Did the Tops ever lay their vocals on the track ? Or did Ivy Jo Hunter, for that matter?

Also, hoping that U.K.fans have gotten their copies by now.

  21. #21
    No we have not.

I placed my order with Ace Records on Monday, it was shipped on Tuesday and it arrived today. Finally time to sit down and start listening to it. According to their website, it is due for release tomorrow. Excellent service as usual from Ace. The only downside is that on Monday the price was £14.11 but it has now dropped to £13.00, so even more reason to buy it now if you haven't already ordered it!

    Thank you Keith.

I think that mine will be accompanied by an English postman.

I have my copy in my hands and looking forward to listening - and reading - later today.

The price on Amazon is £13 plus £2.87 for shipping [[total £15.87).

Direct from ACE it would now be £13 plus £2.40 for shipping [[total £15.40). I paid £14.11 on pre-order with free shipping from ACE so that was a nice saving.

Not received mine yet...ordered 2nd February.

    Cd arrived

    Sounds great...thanks to all involved.
Freddie Gorman stood out on first play, time to put it on again.
"Baby hit and run" FOUR different versions on the SAME band track. Is that a Motown Record?

  30. #30
playing it again....is Johnny Earl actually Tommy Good?

Track 6 Show me the way HAS been issued on CD before..."The Essential Motown Northern Soul". Spectrum 2018

He does sound similiar - originally assigned to Ivy Jo Hunter, Stop is one of those rare tracks by Weatherspoon - Dean - Stevenson that no one else had a crack at. Paperwork show that this [[probably the sole JE recording) was an audition.

Based on how many Tommy Good tracks have you've heard?
I presume you have his CD?
Sounds like Tommy Good to me....
"Johhny Earl" walked into Motown for an Audition, and then left, with a completed Dean- Weatherspoon-Stevenson track, with Andantes etc. can't see it myself.
I'd guess it was Tommy doing this track, his Motown career falling at the first hurdle.
A name given to the track...maybe with an attempt to re-launch him with a new name.

Yes I have the Tommy Good CD and at no point does he sound like Johnny Earl. Tommy has his own unique way of singing and phrasing.

There was already an artist named Johnny Earl [[singer, DJ and song writer) and it could be him as much as anyone. He had had at least one record released previously and I think it would make more sense that an "established" performer would get the full treatment at his Motown audition.

Plus, you're overlooking the obvious - "Baby I Miss You" was recorded 25 June 1964. The band track for "Stop And Think About Love" wasn't recorded until 16 December 1965 and Johnny Earl's vocal added in January 1966. So why would Tommy Good be auditioning at that point under a different name when he was already a Motown artist?

I guess it would have been an "off the shelf" backing track rather than written for Mr Earl [[or Mr Good). It's all quite intriguing.

Wonder if Mickey Stevenson would have an idea.

That record was issued in 1960....
so he auditioned/recorded for Motown 6 years later......fair enough.
    But "Unknown" Tommy Good.?
He was at Motown from 1964, produced by Berry, Smokey, Staunton & Walker, Wm Stevenson and remained until 1968/69. He must have recorded some tracks, and he probably would not know IF any of his unreleased stuff was filed under another name....happens a lot.

"So why would Tommy Good be auditioning at that point under a different name when he was already a Motown artist?"

Are we 100% sure it's an audition?
Would Motown provide a completed band track, with backing vocals for an audition? By Jan 1966, Motown might have given up thinking they could "sell" Tommy Good. They MAY have thought a new name might work

Whoever Johnny Earl was, I don't think his Motown audition was bad - certainly not bad enough to put paid to a recording career.

Paul was quite specific that it was an audition. No reason at all why they wouldn't have used an off the shelf backing track [[for Ivy Jo Hunter) as a try out for the Motown sound. But the thing I keep coming back to is - Johnny Earl sounds nothing like Tommy Good. No one will convince me of that.

  43. #43
There was a mistake on the Ivy Hunter/Tommy Good track "Ask the lonely".....mistakes happen.
At least 3 people agree with me that it SOUNDS like Tommy Good....
    Let's leave it at that.

  44. #44
Listen to both singers through your headphones as I do. Let's leave it there.

Mine`s on it`s 2nd playing and I`m loving it [[thank you Keith) Sorry snakepit I`m with mystery on this one. I can`t hear Tommy Good at all. If it was an unknown song then I would have thought of Tommy Good but not for long.Is that a new version of Four Tops`"Just Your Love" and the next outing for the Contour`s "Baby Hit And Run" sounds a bit different. "Who Do You Love" on now - great.
If you haven`t ordered it - do it!

  47. #47
    Roger
That's fair enough, but is the Johnny Earl yrack a KNOWN song?
    I've never heard it before.

  48. #48
Given that the Mel-o-dy label ceased in 1965 [[the last release being April 1965), it seems strange that Al Klein was producing Bruce Channel for Motown on 24th November 1966, especially when Bruce had had records released on Le Cam, Jade, Brownfield, Tiris and Charay during 1965-1966. Seems odd.

  49. #49
Maybe they thought that he sounded too much like Tommy Good. I would have thought that Tommy would have mentioned it as it would have been his last recording and under a different name at that!

Its quite clearly marked as an audition - I really dont think Motown would have bothered to 'fake' official paperwork to mask the fact that it was Tommy Good - what would that achieve - the only people seeing it would have been a select few Motown employees.

No JE had two takes on the multi and that was it - no more recordings - my guess is he just didnt cut the mustard with whoever was on QC that week.

Maybe they thought that they had already failed with a singer of a similiar style - who knows.
Easiset answer to this I have sent it to Tommy to listen to
