This is a list I compiled last year when petitioning Motown [[Hip-O Select) and Bear Family regarding a Junior Walker box set. If I've missed any significant releases, please update!

    Here was Bear Family's response:

"Thank you very much for your email. We always love to hear from our friends in the USA.

Although Junior made a couple of remarkable recordings during his long career, we are not planning to release the music of JUNIOR WALKER & HIS ALLSTARS on Bear Family at the moment."

Wow, based on the discography above, I'd say he had more than A COUPLE of remarkable recordings. Thoughts?

That was a very condescending response wasn't it? Junior Walker and the Allstars had way more than a "couple" of remarkable recordings. I don't think the people at "Bear Family" [[whom I've never even heard of before) understand the legacy of Junior Walker and the millions of people that enjoyed his work.

As soon as another of Juniors songs is featured in the soundtrack of a popular motion picture, they will be falling all over themselves to capitalize on it!

Bear Family is a German label that releases high-quality [[and expensive) box sets that are highly prized by collectors. I have five: Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, Freddie King, Fats Domino, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima [[they also do a lot of remastering / reissues of country, rockabilly, and crooner-type stuff). I was surprised by their response, especially since they do a lot of early R&B reissues. I can only hope they'll change their minds down the line and release a Junior Walker set at some point.

I was so disappointed when Way Back Home wasn't a hit. When that didn't happen, I knew the hits were coming to an end for Junior.

I think this is a job for Hip-O Select! I'd love to see Junior Walker & the All Stars albums packaged as a CD box set like the albums by The Marvelettes, The Miracles, David Ruffin, The Supremes [[and others).

Stone Diamond, thank you for the full discography of most awesomeness! Blows mine out of the water!

I wrote HW last year about a Junior release, and this was his reply:

"Junior was fantastic and I got to meet him when Motown issued ‘Blow The House Down’ in 1983. He deserves some sort of “treatment” - I am mapping out just how many discs that would be. Question really is, how would you start? The 60s albums you mention, although they’re now out of print, were once available, while the 70s albums have never been on CD. Dilemmas...

    HW"

And I went to high school with Junior's grandson :-) Go Spartans!

I suggest that a reissue program for Junior Walker's albums start with the first albums he recorded for Motown [[with the singles he recorded for the Harvey label and anything from the vaults from that period) then move on to the '70s albums. I have the "Shotgun/Soul Session" and "Road Runner/Home Cookin'" compliations that came out in England in 2003 and they're both great.

Didnt Jr have two completely different LIVE albums released? I think its criminal that none of his albums are available on CD. At least the U.K. got the first four as twofers a few years back. Grateful I got them at the time...Paulo xxx

The live CD that was released was the 1970 LP, but with the 1967 artwork.

In addition to his band's credited record releases, they also did session work for Gwen Gordy's and Harvey Fuqua's Harvey/Tri-Phi Records. One I remember best is Shorty Long's "What's The Matter" on Tri-Phi 1021. They did a terrific backing, and especially, his fantastic sax solo on the bridge.

After Berry bought Harvey/Tri-Phi out, and folded them into Motown, I was sorely disappointed that Motown didn't use The All Stars for backing in sessions for their other artists.

They were still using Mike Terry, instead of Junior Walker.

Has anyone else notice that 1/2 of the tracks on Gotta Hold On To This Feeling are tracks from their Road Runner album?

Motown was trying to capitalize on Junior's new found popularilty due to the huge success of "What Does It Take", a single that was taken from the Home Cookin' album. There were only five previously unreleased songs on Gotta Hold On To this Feeling: the title track, "These Eyes", "Proud Mary", "Clinging to the Thought That She's Coming Back", and "I've Got To Find A Way To Win Maria Back". All of the other material came from Junior's previous albums [[2 from Shotgun; 3 from Roadrunner; and 2 from Home Cookin'). The new songs were the A & B sides of Junior's next two singles that came out after "What Does It Take", plus Junior's cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary." I'm guessing that Junior's "Proud Mary" was never released as a single because Solomon Burke's version of the song came out first.

I emailed BEAR Family once to ask for a complete Capitol records box set for Kay Starr - and got the same stock response as vcq. I've no idea how they go about selecting and obtaining rights to music at Bear Family - but I was staggered they weren't planning anything on Kay Starr. I would have thought she was absolutely on target for their market. I'm not so surprised they weren't interested in Jr Walker - but it is about time some record label was. Jr Walker & The All Stars were a major part of Motown's history. It is incredible that so many of their albums have never been issued in digital form. Kent or Reel....who is going to take the glory?

Does anyone know if their Live LP from '67 was recorded during the Motown Monday concert series in Detroit from '66? And iss anyone else curious about the Velvelettes as their opening act? What I wouldn't give to hear those tracks...

I knew that. I owned a record company. It's just that as a fan, I missed hearing Junior Walker play sax on other artists' records.

It was a series of concerts that Motown artist gave during the summer of 1966, they were held on Mondays at the Roostertail in Detroit. Some of those concerts were later released as Live albums. From what I can gather, there would be an opening act and then a main act [[usually one of the more popular Motown acts). Tammi Terrell opened for the Miracles, and it looks like the Velvelettes may have opened for Jr. Walker and the All Stars. I'm not sure what other acts performed during this concert series. If someone knows more about the series, or if I may have misstated something please jump in and let me know.

Thank you. I guess that is why the Velvelettes have a brief snippet on one of Jr. Walker's live albums then.

In the liner notes for THE TEMPTATIONS LIVE! cd, it says Motown Mondays began in the Upper Deck of the Roostertail on 8/22/66 with the Four Tops, who recorded a live album.

They were followed by Jr. Walker and the All Stars [[live album), Marvin Gaye, Martha and the Vandellas [[live album), the Miracles, the Marvelettes, and the series ended with the Tempts [[live album).

It'd be great to have a later live concert of the Marvelettes. I love the early "Recorded Live on Stage" LP, but it is pretty raw and Wanda is even screechy in some parts of her portion of "Locking Up My Heart." As a document of the early Motortown Revue it is wonderful, but I would love to hear their later more polished performances from a few years later when their sound so vastly changed [[and improved). Maybe our friends at Hip-O have some tracks like this which might be included on the "Marvelettes Volume 2." I can dream, anyway!

From earlier discussions on the Motown Monday concert series it was stated by HW that the Marvelettes concert was edited for radio broadcast, but not much of their live performance remains. HW has also mentioned that these artist also performed during this time frame in Cleveland [[as a runup to the Detroit shows) and that these concerts were also recorded and a tape exist of these acts in concert! I also think that the Supremes performed during this time period; on their box set the song You Can't Hurry Love is performed and on it Diana Ross mentions that the song is currently the #1 song in the country. I'm not sure what chart she refers to but it has to be pretty close to this time frame [[Motown Monday). Also on Brenda Holloway's Anthology she performs the song Summertime, and it's listed [[please correct me if I'm wrong) as being recorded at the Roostertail in 1966. So I'm wondering who she may have been the opening act for. I would also imagine that Marvin Gaye's live album was canned because of his Copa performance and recording that also took that summer. Maybe Motown was planning on releasing his Copa album instead of the the Live album that the Temps, Tops and M&Vs released. And I'm also guessing that the Supremes had just released a live album the year before so another live album wasn't needed.

Most of the Motown Monday shows at the Roostertail Upper Deck were taped and aired on Detroit radio the following weekend. I forget which station, either WKNR or WXYZ.

How about releasing Junior's Sixties albums in a package and then his Seventies output?

What with the shape of the current record industry and all, I'd rather see one comprehensive box set released...in this climate, it's more than likely that part one [[AKA Junior's 60s output) would be released, and part two would never materialize due to slow sales, downsizing, etc.

I would rather have the 70's material released. One can find most if not all of Jr. Walker's 60's material. An over looked 70's album is "Hot Shot". If Motown/Hip-O is not interested in releasing, maybe Universal should allow a reissue label to release the 70's albums. We just saw the release of his Whitfield albums.

Junior's 1979 Whitfield label album Back Street Boogie is scheduled to be released on July 26 by Wounded Bird, a CD-only reissue label. Wounded Bird has previously reissued a lot of albums on CD in a variety of genres. Examples of their other reissues include Instant Groove and Get Ready, two of the last studio albums recorded by King Curtis before his tragic death in 1971.

That is too bad... give them another shot, especially "Rainbow Funk", "Moody Jr.", " Peace and Understanding is Hard to Find", and "Hot Shot".

I think it was on one of the early "vault" collections..."From the Vaults" or possibly "Motown Superstars Sing Motown Superstars."
