Long vaulted Whitney Houston concert coming to PBS in December

PBS, Sony Music Vision, and Legacy Recordings, in partnership with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and Primary Wave Music, today announced the broadcast of a special edition of The Concert for a New South Africa [Durban], celebrating the 30th anniversary of Whitney Houston’s historic South Africa concert with a fully-remastered release on PBS stations beginning December 1, 2024 [check local listings]. The never-before-televised concert from Durban, South Africa, has been beautifully remastered in 4K with remastered audio. The entire original concert film — recently released worldwide in nearly 1,000 theaters in more than 30 countries in October — will also be available for streaming with PBS Passport on December 1, 2024.

I saw this concert in the theater a few weeks ago and it was really a great experience. I went thinking that it was going to be a repeat of her 1994 HBO special but I was pleasantly surprised that it was a totally different show.

A friend who accompanied me complained a bit because she couldn't sing along. I had to explain that Whitney was one of those singers that didn't do note-for-note versions of her hits, especially as the years passed. But I felt she was in pretty good form for this concert. At one point, after I HAVE NOTHING, my friend and I turned to each other and said "Now she sang that!" It was also a heart-tugging moment with her mother Cissy came on stage to conduct a local choir, as she had just passed a few weeks prior.

I also saw it at my local theater last month. I agree with your assessment, Reese. It was fantastic. I think this particular concert is superior to the Johannesburg show that aired on HBO. This initial concert in Durban seemed to have an extra special energy and Whitney seemed even more emotional during this first night in Africa. She really gave it her all, on stage.

I'm glad for everyone else's sake that your friend wasn't able to sing along. Nobody came to hear her sing. Lol.

Believe me, I hate when people sing along. I don't spend big bucks to listen to the out-of-tune guy next to me try to sing ALFIE, which has happened.

My best experience re this was at a Bettye Lavette show at Joe's Pub in NYC. I was sitting at a table with this woman who sang along with EVERY song. I guess at least one other person was as fed up as I was because they turned to the woman and said "There's a singer on stage." No more singing after that.

Funny enough...I had tickets for Adele's previous tour and ended up selling them.

    I agree with you, Reese.

I don't know how anyone could even try to keep up with Bettye, by singing along.
