The last live performance of the original Chi-Lites

    SoulTracks.com:

Back in 2004, PBS was putting together a televised classic soul music concert [often shown during fundraising] and there was a surprise for the audience: The classic lineup of the legendary act The Chi-Lites was reunited, with songwriter and lead singer Eugene Record, who had left the group nearly two decades earlier for a solo Gospel career, joining back together with group co-founders Marshall Thompson and Robert “Squirrel” Lester [former group member Craedel Jones had died in 1994] for a performance of the group’s biggest hits, “Oh Girl” and “Have You Seen Her.”

They also performed, "Are You My Woman [[Tell Me So)" on the dvd.

And what the audience didn't know, the reason Gene wanted to reunite with the guys so badly is because he knew he was dying. He didn't tell anyone until after the shoot.

Claudette Robinson called me from the hospital the day Gene passed.

The same thing happened earlier with George Williams reuniting with The Tymes for my Doo Wop 51, while knew George knew he was dying from Cancer - he was also shy about telling anyone and wanted to be with the guys one last time, so he joined us from the UK in Pittsburgh.

Thanks TJL for the information. The Chi-Lites are one of my favorite Soul Music groups and I was so sorry to hear about Eugene Record's death from cancer back in 2005.

Good news: He became a Evangelical Christian by giving his life to Jesus Christ.
