    The Soul Survivors

Anyone else a fan of these guys? Expressway To Your Heart was always one of my favorite songs and it always got a lot of radio play here in Philly through the years.

But I can't find much information on these guys. There aren't many clips of them from back in the day and it looks like they only put out one album. I was surprised with having a #4 song on the charts that they didn't have a follow up single until a year later.

Can anyone identify the lead singers? Who is who on the album cover?

I do love their 2nd single, Explosion, even though it's pretty similar to Expressway and also love their cover of Too Many Fish In the Sea.

From the pictures I've seen it looks like they're white and maybe latino guys.

I also know Jerry Blavat had a lot to do with their success.

Blue-eyed soul at it's best. "Expressway" was a club / radio hit in the UK but not a chart hit.
Their follow-up 45 was just a bit 'too similar' for many. But they continued to record & put out a good few other good tracks.
They were great live too; had lots of fans at black venues.

I remember the The Soul Survivors! The original members were Charlie Ingui, Richie Ingui, Kenny Jeremiah, Joe Forgione & Paul Venturini. Their big hit, "Expressway To Your Heart" was the first song written & produced by Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff to hit both the Pop & Soul Music charts [#3R&B/#4Pop in 1967 according to Billboard USA]. They recorded only three albums between 1967 thru 1974 for the Crimson, Atco & TSOP labels.

Charlie Ingui of The Soul Survivors is one of my favorite singers. I LOVE the Soul Survivors. I just saw Charlie at a Bettye LaVette gig a few weeks ago in Philly. He is the last remaining Soul Survivor of the original group, except for Chuck Trois, guitar. Eddie, you forgot about him.

Expressway was Gamble & Huff's first hit record. Back in those days, many groups put out songs that were reminiscent in structure to their hit, hoping that it, too, would resonate with the public.

Their second album, Take Another Look, on Atco, is a great album. Partially recorded in New York and also at Fame Studios, it also features Duane Allman doing a ripping solo on the song Darkness.

My sister used to go and see them before Expressway, and she was able to get 15 year old me into nightclubs to see them. I never saw anything like them. They had a dynamic stage act. I said "I want to do THAT!" and that got me started singing in bands.

I could go on and on about them. They truly changed my life trajectory. It was so good seeing and talking to Charlie.

If you want to get an idea of how exciting they were, go to my Facebook page and check out the photo galleries. There are several of them.

Eddie, if you saw them back in the day, their last guitar player, Eddie Leonetti, was a bad ass. And at that point they added a bass player, Tony. Up till then, Paulie used bass pedals.

Hey, I've never had the pleasure of seeing The Soul Survivors in concert. Only heard the two hits "Expressway To Your Heart" & "Explosion In Your Soul" back in 1967-68. And I didn't know about the other original member of the group guitarist, Chuck Trois [I got my info about the group from Wikipedia and they failed to list him]. Just looked into their discography and The Soul Survivors did make two more albums, Released! & Heart Full Of Soul in 2004 and 2009 in addition to the three from 1967 thru 1974 that I knew about.

Just checked out your page on Facebook via the link on your message and I don't recognize any pictures of The Soul Survivors [while I do see a lot of photos of Bettye LaVette]. I've never seen the group perform either during their '60s heyday or any more recent shows so I wouldn't recogize them. Thanks anyway and Thanks for your info & memories of The Soul Survivors.
