I'm really looking forward to this event! I'll be in attendance and I'm quite stoked about it. It feels like a family reunion to me.

I'm very jealous. On a different day I might find myself driving down there for this. 200 bucks is not a bad price at all for seeing the likes of Gladys and Dionne and Chaka and Al Green ...etc...

And it looks as though they have the stages alternating in a way that one can go back and forth and not miss any over the other.

Also looks like Diana will put on a full show and not a train station type of one ...

Ms. T, a full report will be appreciated !!!!!!! Enjoy your very full day !!

Well, this looks pretty flippin AMAZING

Not only the absolute LEGENDS [Diana, Lionel, Smokey, Chaka, Dionne], but so many other acts that I would love to see [The O’Jays, Isley Brothers, The Intruders, Dazz Band] AND not to mention some great new musicians [Aaron Frazer, Duran Jones & The Indications].

The question really is… who ISN'T on the billing!!!!????

Would have loved to been there… hope it’s as great as it sounds

  9. #9
Also, I’ve never known a concert to start at ELEVEN IN THE MORNING…..!!!!!!

Well this is a festival show so they start early so all acts can hopefully be able to perform. Aren't you English? If so, surely you know Glastonbury and such festivals start their performance in late morning/early afternoon.

Ah yes, well, you’ll have to forgive me, as I have never been to such a festival unfortunately! I merely meant that I was impressed by such an early start time, as a reflection of how many acts they have to fit in

    enquiring minds want to know:
    the promo poster:

why does Smokey get a special heart by his name??
why does Al Green get a special star?

why does Durand Jones [who?] get large shared headliner billing with Smokey and then just below gets a second teenier mention??

WHY is Dionne Warwick's name so teeny??

who performs these days under the name "The Jacksons"??

Old people time, Tom. Old people. The audience would fall asleep if it started any later. The ”Sanka” break is a rousing 1pm!!!

  14. #14
I'll be there playing keyboards for The Emotions!

  15. #15
Eric Burdon & The Animals. Are they a natural fit and are they held in such high esteem by the target audience?

Wow you're playing for my favorite groups [[The Emotions). I follow Wanda and her daughters on Facebook. I'm so glad they're using a live band instead of tracks. Have a great set.

Well there's one of the possible reunions I was hinting at:
    Eric Burden and War

  18. #18
Eric, aged 83, is the sole original member of The Animals.
Lonnie Leroy Jordan, aged 75, is the sole original member of War.

I guess there could be a reunion of sorts.

But my query more relates to whether Eric Burden and The Animals are a natural fit to an overwhelmingly soul artists bill. Is he relevant to this concert? I'm in the UK so don't have that perspective to judge. Wondered if any US based members had a view.

  19. #19
OK so here's some feel good, hello ol' chums, reunion opportunities that could happen today in LA:

    Eric Burdon and War
    Dionne Warwick and The Spinners
    Lionel Richie and The Commodores
    The Temptations and Diana Ross

    Diana Ross and Chic
    Rose Royce and The Temptations
Mick Jagger and The Jacksons ...
    ok that one not likely
    Lionel Richie and Diana Ross

...the Glastonbury Festival runs to over 100 stages ...and with over 2000 acts ...over 3 days...!

How did it go? What were your overal thoughts about the festival given your perspective as a musician on stage?

Here's a review of the festival with the writer focusing specifically on the performances by Los Yesterdays, Santana and Diana Ross:

looks like Dionne showed up early to appear with them on stage ! Good for her!!!!

Must have been pre-planned or its a great coincidence that her attire that day matched theirs...

["this is great to be singing this like this , but who are these 4 guys???"]

    Has anyone ever asked her:
Did you and the Spinners record THEN CAME YOU in the studio together ??

    Hi Boogiedown!

Thom Bell: "Neither one of them, Dionne or the Spinners, could get to Philadelphia for one song. I had to record them, where they both happened to be at the same time and that was in L.A., at the Beach Boys' studio."

    Best regards
    Heikki

I'm really glad to learn this shared singing together actually took place.
Ain't nothing like the real thing, eh??

    Good job Heikki!!

She didn't "show up early" - the Spinners and Dionne shared the same stage [[there were four). A lot of the headliners sat on the side of the stage to check out other acts - Dionne was no different.

She did not plan to perform "Then Came You" with the group.

You may not know who the "four guys" are - but the families of Bobbie Smith, Pervis Jackson, Billy Henderson, and Henry Fambrough know who they are. They are the Spinners and have been entrusted with this Mighty Legacy.

Yes I can see from the set schedule posted above they were both on the Fool stage with The Spinners starting the day followed by Dionne.
In order for them to go on stage together, either Dionne had to go on early to join them on their show or they had to stay over past theirs to be on her show. My observation was it was she that went on early for their show.

I was injecting my thoughts in fun that while Dionne might have enjoyed sharing the stage , inside she might have been thinking ...."but who are these guys ?" since of course none of them recorded THEN CAME YOU with her in 1974.

No need to get excited ...that's just the truth.

I'm glad they came off so well coordinated in their look ... they look cool and summery.

It was fantastic!! Not only because of the large, beautiful audience, but for me it was so cool because of all of the friends of mine that I caught up with, and all of the other shows I was able to see. First I saw The Spinners, met some of them. Then some of us went to see Evelyn "Champagne" King, I used to keys for her for about fifteen years. Our bass player also played for Evelyn on this show. I ran into El DeBarge backstage, I used to play keys for him on tour. Soon as Evelyn was finished we went back over to our stage and played for The Emotions. After us, I watched The Whispers, I played keys on one of their albums. After The Whispers, I saw my dear friend Gladys, was able to chat with her after her show. After Gladys I watched my man Charlie Wilson's show, I previously have done two tours playing keys for The Gap Band. I met one of my musical heroes, Jimmy Jam! He was watching Charlie's show also. When Charlie was done I got a ride back over to Artists Parking to put my equipment back in my car, then went to catering to grab a bite to eat. After that, I topped the night off by seeing "The Boss" Diana Ross!

The only negative thing I would say happened was because of the schedule being do tight, there were a few instances, not just with us, but a number of acts where the sound engineers didn't quite have the sound together before the first note of the show. Chaka Khan straight up said "what's happening with my background vocals?!" And man, with The Temptations, it took quite a while for them to bring Ron Tyson's mic up! I saw The Dazz Band, and The Mary Jane Girls having sound problems as well when I watched the YouTube videos of their shows. I ain't gon' lie, I was exhausted by the time I left to go home, I had been there since 9:45 am! All in all though, I had a ball! And just look at who I met! Animals drummer John Steel is still alive at 83, and still plays with Animals and Friends
