Carolyn Crawford-It Takes A Lotta Teardrops/I'm In Love [Single-9/27/2024-Kent UK]

    Info from Kent/Ace Records UK:

We follow up Carolyn Crawford’s recent big selling Kent 45 ‘Get Up And Dance’ with another top class Mickey Stevenson production on ‘It Takes A Lotta Teardrops’.

The Leon Ware and Vicki Basemore song was also covered by Kim Weston but neither version was released at the time.

"It Takes A Lotta Teardrops" was recorded by Kim Weston in July 1967 and produced by Mickey Stevenson. Presumably it was part of her first recordings post-Motown after signing with MGM. The song was included on the Ace/Kent CD, "Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities: Volume 7" in 2021. The notes there said the song's original title was "It Takes A Lotta Teardrops [[To Wash Away Love's Hard Knocks)." In no surprise to anyone, Mickey was a key part of producing the Motown sound because this song sounds [to me] as though it could've been recorded at Hitsville. With that key ingredient of having her husband an expert at recreating the Motown sound elsewhere, I wish Kim had the opportunity to really breakout in those years, 1967-1969. She deserved it.

The version by Carolyn Crawford was recorded in 1972. I'd bet her recording of "Ready Or Not Here Comes Love," for Stevenson International was recorded around the same time. Also unreleased at the time, it was included on the same CD, "Northern Soul's Classiest Rarities: Volume 7."
