    Favourite 60s era single B-sides

There are so many great songs used as B-sides during the 60s that I thought we could have some fun in listing our personal top ten. Here's mine in no particular order:

    1. I Got A Feeling - Four Tops
    2. If This World Were Mine - Marvin & Tammi
    3. Going Down For The Third Time - Supremes
    4. There's No Love Left - Isley Brothers
    5. Something On My Mind - Syreeta
    6. Angie Girl - Stevie Wonder
    7. Wherever I Lay My Hat - Marvin Gaye
    8. Third Finger, Left Hand - Martha & Vandellas
    9. Two Can Have A Party - Marvin & Tammi
    10. Since You've Been Gone - Four Tops

    What's your choices?

I feel a new playlist coming on!

Well you certainly started off with the absolute BEST OF THE BEST. I have stated on here multiple times that I Got a Feeling is one of the Tops' best ever songs if not one of Motown's all time greatest.

As for your others, the only ones I would feel strongly about would be Going Down for the Third Time and Third Finger Left Hand.

Some of my favorite B sides would be:

Starting the Hurt All Over Again-Brenda Holloway
Baby I've Got It- Jimmy Ruffin
Got Myself a Good Man-Gladys and the Pips

and I could probably come up with more Martha and Marvelettes B sides if I put my mind to it. But for now I will let other folks chime in.

If I had to choose just one - it'd be The Isley Bros - "There's No Love Left". Personally I consider all Brenda Holloway singles as double A sides. So stickling solely to the 60s and whittling it down to just 10 [[avoiding re-releases I think) -

Kim Weston - Just Loving You
Brenda Holloway - I'll Be Available
Kim Weston - Don't Compare Me With Her
Supremes - Everything's good About You
Contours - Just A Little Misunderstanding
    Isley Bros - I Hear A Symphony
Temptations - You're Not An Ordinary Girl
Elgins - Stay In My Lonely Arms
    Stevie Wonder - Hold Me
Isley Bros - Why When Love Is Gone

  6. #6
There are too many to name but one of my favorites is Gladys Knight and the Pips' IT'S TIME TO GO NOW.

Five of my all time favorite "B" sides are:

    Forever - Marvelettes
A Love Like Yours - Martha & the Vandellas
    Don't Look Back - Temptations
    You'll Lose a Precious Love - Temptations
It's Been a Long Long Time - Elgins

You know, I'm amazed at one or two of the B-Side choices, and this one in particular, caught my eye. To me this is the WORST-EVER Jimmy Ruffin B-Side - a real funeral dirge, that I really cannot stand to hear. Jimmy's BEST B-Side to my ears is "Baby I've Got It". Love It.

But I really like most people's choices - and here's a couple of goodies not yet added - "The Day You Take One" [[Marvelettes), "Motoring" [[Vandellas) - just two of my all-time favorites.

I'm with Heikki on this one - "Tomorrow's Tears" is a fantastic song. Of course, I love "Baby I've Got It" as well. Both had already been chosen lol.

But it's fair to say that back in the day I tended to play a lot of b-sides as much as the a-side. The trend continued in the 70s with Invictus, for example Freda Payne's "The Easiest Way To Fall" and the Chairmen "Bless You" and "Patches".

    Darling Baby - wasn't that a "B" side?

"Darling Baby" was the "B" Side of "Put Yourself In My Place." However, "Darling Baby" ended up being the hit--at least on the R&B chart--went all the way to Number 4. "Darling Baby" was the title track from the Elgins only album.

    It's Been a Long Long Time - wasn't that an A-Side? ...with a B-side called "I Understand My Man"

It was an 'a' side in 1970 when it became a UK hit.

But the thread is about the 60s and it was a b-side in the 60s.

Re-releases don't count - so there rofl [[otherwise "My Girl", "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Needle In A Haystack" as well as many more would also count as b-sides).

But it well deserved an a-side ranking and fully deserved to be a bigger hit than it was [[number 31 UK). The surprise is that it never made a British Motown Chartbusters release - nor even 16 Big Hits in the UK [[of course it did in the USA). They couldn't leave it off the Motown Disco Classics series though.

"Old Love[[Lets Try it Again) by Mary Wells, "Operator" by Mary Wells "Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right by Mary Wells[[actually made the Billboard Top 100. "Whats Easy For Two" made #29 on Billboard Hot 100.....Motown 45's were always the BEST buy, you knew the B side would be quality.

I had always planned if Universal had continued releasing Motown product to put together a 2 or 3 CD set of b sides - mind you I giess we can all make one up ourselves now

  24. #24
I`d much prefer a 3 CD of alternative recordings - we`ve got all the B sides.

    "
I agree 100% about "Your Love Is Wonderful" should have been an A-side. And to think it wasn't even placed on one of their "regular albums", and we didn't see it released until later compilation albums came out.

The only drawback to this song is that it does appear to repeat the same lyrics when it appears to be moving toward a different verse. "I was lost with all my bridges burned..."

"I was lost with all my bridges burned..."
This is one those songs the talented Ivy Hunter had a part in composing and producing.
