15 Best Disco Songs of All Time

This guy Samuel Moore, seems to put out some kind of Best List every other week. Last one was Best Motown and this week it is Best Disco Songs of All Time. If the definition of All Time is Timeless, then I agree with him. I still like all these songs, whereas a lot of the stuff that i used to like in disco era is now just a repetitive boring beat. Not criticism, just a part of getting old. His list does include a couple of my favorites, but not my two favorites, which are Native New Yorker by Odysey and Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - Cherchez La Femme

    Table of Contents
    1. Stayin’ Alive by Bee Gees
    2. I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor
    3. Y.M.C.A. by Village People
    4. Le Freak by Chic
    5. I’m Coming Out by Diana Ross
    6. Get Down Tonight by KC and the Sunshine Band
    7. Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry
    8. Ring My Bell by Anita Ward
    9. Boogie Wonderland by Earth, Wind & Fire with The Emotions
    10. Don’t Leave Me This Way by Thelma Houston
    11. Last Dance by Donna Summer
    12. Good Times by Chic
    13. We Are Family by Sister Sledge
    14. Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now by McFadden & Whitehead
    15. September by Earth, Wind & Fire

As we would expect there are wide variations with this survey as well. Very few on his list appeal to me. The few that come to mind for me would be:

    This Is It- Melba Moore

    Doctor's Orders- Carol Douglas

Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But the Rent- Gwen Guthrie

Don't Give it Up- Linda Clifford [[the long version of course!)

On and On and On-ABBA [[How that was not a major hit I will never know)

Native New Yorker- Odyssey [[Sorry but I had left that off until I saw the previous poster's addition, which made me think "Oh but of course!!!") I also loved Down Boy by them.

My own all-time favorite from the disco era, is Dan Hartman's 12-inch of "Relight My Fire" featuring Loleatta Holloway on the "Strong enough to walk on through the night..."
part - and totally missing from this guy Samuel Moore's Top 15 list. Most of his choices are otherwise OK.

hey he listed the titles off the back of a "greatest disco hits" CD. Good for him. He got it right, there are these 15 and only these 15 songs worth mentioning and he got them. Zow-ie.

Melvin , me too.... Dr Buzzard , that first album

I'd only have picked 6 of his choices ... he certainly ignored some great disco hits ...
numerous Philly Int tracks, "Boogie Oogie Oogie", "Rock Your Baby", "Move On Up", "I'll Be Around", “Don’t Look Any Further”, "Brothers Gonna Work it Out", "Lucky Fellow", "Come Back Strong", "Tell Me Something Good", "This I Swear", "The Whole Damn World Is Going Crazy" & more ...

    This list leaves off so many of my Favorite Disco Songs like;
"Chercez La Femme"-Dr, Buzzard's Original Savannah Band
    "Love Hangover"-Diana Ross
    "Native New Yorker"-Odyssey
"Girl You Need A Change Of Mind"-Eddie Kendricks
"My Sweet Summer Suite"-Barry White/Love Unlimited Orch.
    "Double Cross"-First Choice
    "Love Sensation"-Loletta Holloway
    "Body Contact Contract"-The Trammps

I could go on and on; after all 15 is too a small number to list the best songs in Any Genre.

Missed this anthem off my list ...

  10. #10
AND THIS ... even the movies got into this group ...

  11. #11
and this one should have been included too ...

  12. #12
Surely The Trammps and Tavares should be on any disco list.

  13. #13
Sylvester should've been on that list, too.

No best disco list can exist without the fabulous Sylvester!

    Another version only promo
Anastacia was supposed to to do the female parts but was not available so they kept the original vocals by Loleatta

70s Disco is my second favorite music genre after Motown. Here on Cape Cod The Boatslip Resort in Provincetown has a daily afternoon Tea Dance in the summer. On Thursdays, with some exceptions, the theme is 70s Disco. I have already been a few times this year and plan to go tomorrow. I can’t wait. I always have a great time, with or without alcohol!

Here are some of my all-time favorites. They are mostly from the late 70s. I am on vacation so I don’t have my records or CDs handy, nor my Billboard Disco chart book for reference. I particularly love vintage disco from the early to mid-70s. When I get home I might make a list of my favorites from the early disco era.

Of the artists below I only listed my favorite song from each.

Vertigo/Relight My Fire - Dan Hartman
You Make Me Feel Mighty Real - Sylvester
This Time Baby - Jackie Moore
Where The Happy People Go - The Trammps
I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
Heaven Must Have Sent You - Bonnie Pointer
Don’t Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston
    The Boss - Diana Ross
    Victim - Candi Staton
    Boogie Wonderland - EW&F & The Emotions
    Found A Cure - Ashford & Simpson
Ring My Bell - Anita Ward
It’s Raining Men - Weather Girls
Born To Be Alive - Patrick Hernandez
Turn The Beat Around - Vickie Sue Robinson
I Feel Love - Donna Summer
Feel The Need In Me - Detroit Emeralds
I Got The Next Dance - Deniece Williams
    Funky Town - Lipps Inc
Lay All You Love On Me - ABBA
