Pbs documentary on disco era premiers tonight 6-18-2024

PBS tackles the surprising and overlooked history of disco – the preeminent popular music of the 1970s – in a three-part series, DISCO: SOUNDTRACK OF A REVOLUTION.

The docuseries captures the story of disco: its rise, its fall, and its legacy. From the basement bars of ‘70s New York City to the peak of the global charts, along with iconic tracks and remarkable footage, DISCO: SOUNDTRACK OF A REVOLUTION offers a powerful, revisionist history of the disco age. Told by the original musicians, promoters, and innovators – as well as modern-day musical icons – this series will premiere Tuesday, June 18 on PBS [[check local listings), PBS.org, and the PBS App.

Disco embodied the height of 1970s glamour: a dance floor culture born in New York City that went on to take over the world. But its success also obscured its wider significance. Inextricably bound up with the major liberation movements of the 1970s, disco speaks to some of the biggest issues of today: LGBTQ+ identity and female empowerment.

DISCO: SOUNDTRACK OF A REVOLUTION also underscores disco’s survival. Co-opted by the commercial mainstream, the genre dominated and flooded the market – the airwaves and record shops – leading to a subsequent hate-fueled backlash. As a result, the music and its ethos went back underground, where it evolved into an electronic dance sound that laid the foundations for contemporary dance culture.

only caught the last bit of this 2nd edition.

Two comments .....could care less what anyone on this program under the age of sixty-five has to say with their scholarly, so-called expertise [they weren't there, so they don't know sh*t] .... as they fake to reflect.

    2] was waiting for this:
the revisionists cheap shot that white males single-handedly ruined disco. Could make a long list of all the white males that made disco all that it was as much as any other sub-group.

Let's start with Tom Moulton, who they should be quoting a lot more in this since they're blessed to have him, as he is 80 per cent the driving force behind the success of disco.

I just watched part 2 and think they are still getting it right. Most of the people interviewed were there and were over sixty. I do see what you mean about the few people in the end giving their opinions. This will be played a few times this week. See if you can catch the whole episode.

I will try to watch it ....but suspect it'll fall apart.* They have some good bones to work with like Vince Aletti , Moulton. Morales, Earl Young, Joyce Bogart ... this helped to set up the initial breaking out in NYC part of the story , but so many critical names missing.... most have passed ....but not much effort/success at seeking out others to shine a light.....way too many people blabbering about it that weren't there.
Anyone who is sixty now was ten years old in 1975 ...so their fond recollections and excited witnessings are fake.

*would be a delight to be wrong

Is this a PBS repackaging of something from 2023??
